2. New Brunswick Public Schools The 2009 ASK 5: Language Arts NJ ASK 5 LAL tests will include three reading passages
Reading passages will include literature as well as informational or “everyday” reading selections from a wide array of sources and genres;
Additional field-test passages and items will be included.
3. New Brunswick Public Schools WRITING LAL writing tasks will require students to respond in a variety of modes and forms (e.g., narrative, expository, speculative) and for a variety of purposes, in keeping with standard 3.2 of the CCCS;
These tasks may be labeled “Speculative” or “Explanatory/Expository”; Explanatory writing is new to grade 5. Although, these students were exposed to it when tested on the NJ ASK 4.
4. New Brunswick Public Schools Expository/Explanatory There are two formats for assessing explanatory/expository writing:
One will introduce a topic in a brief verbal prompt (scenario) and ask students to develop a composition about that topic.
2. The second format begins with a poem that introduces a topic. That topic is elaborated further by a brief verbal prompt that students will use as a basis for writing their composition.
