Objectives • SPI 0807.12.1 Recognize that electricity can be produced using a magnet and wire coil. • SPI 0807.12.2 Describe the basic principles of an electromagnet. • SPI 0807.12.3 Distinguish among the Earth’s magnetic field, a magnet, and the fields that surround a magnet and an electromagnet I Can: • Describe the basic principles of an electromagnet • Identify the relationship between an electric current and a magnetic field. • Distinguish among the Earth’s magnetic field, a magnet, and an electromagnet.
Properties of Magnets • Magnet: any material that attracts iron or materials containing iron. • Two magnetic poles: North and South • Magnetic force • Like poles repel, opposite poles attract • Strongest force at poles • Magnetic field: region in which magnetic forces act.
Electromagnetism • Interaction between electricity and magnetism • Components • Battery • Copper wire • Iron core • Solenoid: coil of wire • Make stronger by adding more loops in the solenoid.
Uses of Electromagnets • Doorbells • Electric Motors • Telephones
Generate Electricity • Produce stronger electric current by moving iron core through coil of wire. • Faster movement → greater current • Used • Generators • Transformers • Electrical power for your home
