  1. Minilesson: SO WHAT? Why does memoir matter?

  2. Definitions of ‘memoir’ by memoirists o Virginia Woolf: "A memoir is not what happens, but the person to whom things happen."o William Zinsser: "Memoir is a window into a life." o Jean Little: "Memoir is not the whole head of hair but one or two strands of hair." o Lucy Calkins: "Our memoir will come not only from our memories but also from our imaginations." • TO DO: Choose one quotation and illustrate it.

  3. Ask yourself • Why did I write about this? • Why does it matter? • What theme or life lesson did I learn?

  4. Example In Havana, I walked past a little makeshift table on a street corner. There was a guy sitting there and he was surrounded with cigarette lighters. I didn’t really look that carefully because I don’t smoke. I was busy staring at the gorgeous and decrepit buildings and the ancient cars on the streets, avoiding cigar smoke, and enjoying the tropical sun. Steve nudged me and whispered, “You should look more closely.” “What?” I replied. “Look at the man on the corner.” The guy was refilling lighters. People were bringing him their empties and he was putting in fresh fluid from a can. Our tour guide noticed we had stopped. He explained, “Cubans can’t just go buy new lighters – they have to reuse what they have.” That was very humbling for me to learn. I live somewhere where you can just go to the Dollar Store and get a new lighter for a dollar. I’ve never heard of reusing disposable things. And why not do just that?

  5. To Do • -Incorporate SO WHAT? into your latest draft. • SHOW the reader what he or she should know/learn because of what happened to you
