What is it? • R136a1 is a Hyper giant star a.k.a. A star that is tremendous in mass and luminosity. • At the moment R136a1 is the most massive star that has been recorded in space. • It is a wolf-Rayet star, which means it’s evolved and is now loosing solar mass. • It is a star in the Tarantula Nebula which is also called 30 Doradus ,it is located in the large magellanic cloud.
Where is it? • R136a1 is located in the Tarantula Nebula • The Tarantula nebula is located in the Large Magellanic cloud(LMC for short). • The LMC is a satellite of the milky way and is the fourth largest in the group of 30 beaten by the Andromeda galaxy our galaxy(the milky way which holds our solar system) and the triangulum galaxy. • It can also be seen in the Dorado constellation.

How big is it? • Over the past million years it has been estimated that R136a1 has lost 50 solar masses and once upon a time it had 320 so now it only has around 270. • Stars lose mass two ways the first-mass is converted into energy and second-a solar wind ejecting charged particles(protons and electrons) away from the star. • Comparing the sun to R136a1 is like comparing earth to Jupiter.
How Bright, Hot,old and Far away is it really? • R136a1 is 8,700,000 times brighter than our sun and it is a blue Hyper giant. • R136a1 also has a surface temperature of 53,000 K (52727 °C) the sun has a surface temperature of 5778 K (5505 °C) and earth has a surface temperature of 287 K (14 °C) • R136a1 is 165,000 light years away (1 light year is about 5,865,696,000,000 miles at the speed of light),R136a1 is about 967,839,840,000,000,000 miles away roughly. • R136a1’s age is currently unknown but it is estimated to be over a million years old.
