  1. How to Truly Recharge While on Vacation

  2. Summertime is here and that means it’s vacation season. It seems that life keeps getting more and more stressful and so it’s more important than ever to find a way to relax and refresh. As we juggle multiple commitments and responsibilities simultaneously – work, family, community, social obligations, and more – we find ourselves overbooked, often to the point of being overwhelmed. Weekends are supposed to be the time for a breather, but frequently we need that time to catch up on everything that we neglected during the week.

  3. And then comes vacation - those couple of weeks each year when we really have the chance to escape our hectic lives for some true rest and relaxation. What’s the best approach to take to make the most of that break in order to return refreshed and recharged? The key is to really step away and create some time and space that is truly our own, free from as many of our daily concerns as possible. With that in mind, we’ve compiled some tips that will help:

  4. Start Our Prepared • Get work and responsibilities out of the way so they aren’t hanging over your head. Tie up as many loose ends as possible – bills paid, office commitments wrapped up, etc. If you have little concerns nagging at you while you’re away, it’s difficult to relax. • Choose a spot that lends itself to relaxation – time away in nature may be perfect for some whereas others might prefer to be surrounded by arts and culture. Whatever your preference, skip taking your kids and all your nieces and nephews to Disneyland. While everyone may love it and have fun, it’s unlikely to prove very relaxing. You may need a vacation from your vacation.

  5. • Unless you thrive on spontaneity and adventure, have your reservations in place for flights, hotels, car rentals, etc. That way, you’re less likely to get hit with unwelcome surprises that can derail the flow of your time away. Unplug • If you’ve prepared as recommended above, then most of your pressing matters at the office have been handled – or, at least, your co-workers know that you’ll be unavailable while away. Set up an “out of office” auto-response for your email so others know not to expect an immediate reply – and then stick to it. Studies show that those who do as little as an hour of work per day while away return home

  6. afterward feeling less relaxed and actually remember less of their vacations than those who take the time off entirely. • Feel free to use your phone to take photos, find a great restaurant, and occasionally check-in at home if that gives you peace of mind, but don’t let your electronics rope you into constantly monitoring email or browsing social media. Try to disconnect from your electronic world and reconnect with yourself. Balance Activity and Rest • Both activity and rest are important for our sense of well-being – and finding a healthy balance between the two can do us a world of good.

  7. • For activities, choose something that you already enjoy or have always wanted to try. For some, hiking and biking are great, while others might prefer swimming or taking a yoga class. Maybe you’ve always wanted to learn to surf or to rock climb. Trying something new can be both exciting and rejuvenating. • But be sure to make time for relaxation as well. Lounging on the beach or in a deck chair watching the sunset will help your body reset. Napping has been proven to refresh and revitalize us. Go to bed earlier or consider sleeping in during after a late night. Let you r schedule open up and enjoy taking things slowly. When your pace slows down, it gives your body and your mind the opportunity to reset.

  8. Focus on Self-Care • Spending quality time alone or with close friends and loved ones can be remarkably restorative. Reconnecting with yourself and with the people who are most important in your life is so foundational to sustaining us, its effects can’t be overstated. On the flip side of this, if there are people who trigger you or make you uncomfortable, it’s best to avoid them if you truly want your vacation to be a time for relaxation. • It’s also nice to indulge in something that seems luxurious or special. A massage or spa treatment or an activity where someone else is caring for you can feel very restorative and healing.

  9. • Eat well. Fresh, healthful foods will make your body feel good and your mind feel sharp. Cut down on junk food and limit alcohol intake to keep yourself feeling your best. • If you really want to emphasize self-care, then take a yoga class or spend time meditating. Both of these practices can be powerfully healing for you physically, mentally, and emotionally. Put these tips into place and you’re bound to return from vacation relaxed and recharged – with more energy and enthusiasm as you tackle your commitments and get back to your busy routine. Enjoy your time away – and use it to make your life better once you get home!
