  1. THE FRENCH AND INDIAN WAR A STRUGGLE FOR EMPIRE David T. Booz

  2. A Struggle for Empire • The British and French fought for control of North America and indeed the entire world • The Ohio Valley becomes the focus of the struggle for the fur trade • These two European powers had already fought three wars to determine which one would dominate the world

  3. 1750 • The French decided to build forts to protect their frontier against the English • Lead plates were buried wherever a fort was to be built • At the Forks of the Ohio Fort Duquesne was built by the French

  4. Virginians swear, “The French must go!” • Governor Dinwiddie of Virginia sends George Washington to tell the French to leave the area since Virginia claimed the Forks of the Ohio as part of Virginia • Washington, with Christopher Gist, goes to the French at Fort Le Boeuf near Lake Erie and tells them to leave • The French are not impressed!

  5. The Forks of the Ohio become the focal point of the conflict • George Washington returned to the area at the command of Governor Dinwiddie with orders to get rid of the French and control the area • The commander of Fort Duquesne sent his younger brother, Ensign Coulon de Jumonville and 30 men to watch the Virginians • On May 28, 1754 Washington attacked the camp of the French scouting party. Jumonville was killed along with 9 other soldiers and 21 were captured. One French soldier escaped and ran back to his fort.

  6. This was a small, wooden fort built in a low swale in an open space called Great Meadows. The French and their Indian allies came after Washington. The English had 284 men . They were surrounded by the French and Indians, and in a pouring rain, Washington lost 1# of his force. The French offer terms for surrender. Washington could not read French so the papers were read to him by Captain McKay of the South Carolina militia. Washington surrenders, and is allowed to go back to Williamsburg. Washington Built Fort Necessity

  7. Washington was disgraced • The surrender papers said that he was a “murderer” and that the King of England was also responsible for the death of the French soldiers since Washington was his servant. • Washington looked very bad in British eyes. • In order to fix this insult the British sent an army to Virginia under the command of General Edward Braddock.

  8. Braddock landed at Alexandria Virginia in 1755 with two regiments.

  9. Braddock moves to capture the Forks of the Ohio • The British army moves west in several columns to Fort Cumberland in the colony of Maryland. • Braddock then built a road to the west into Pennsylvania and reached the area of Fort Duquesne in July, 1755. • Braddock had over 2,000 British regulars and over 400 Virginia militiamen. • George Washington had come along as an aide-de-camp to Braddock.
