  1. Article: Caringapproach.com Bethesda Counseling for Self-Esteem Self-esteem is an important metric for all of us when looking at our own happiness. It is the degree to which we feel confident, valued, and respected. Becoming aware of our low self-esteem is an important first step in improving our self-image. If you are experiencing self-doubt, social isolation, suppressed anger, or shame, you may be struggling with your self-esteem. Self-esteem is a symptom of anxiety and depression, so if you are unhappy with your current state of mind, working on your self-image could be a key to improving your mental outlook. Self-esteem is almost always learned in childhood. Your experiences as a child and young adult contribute directly to how you see yourself as an adult. Whether you were criticized by your parents or peers, being deprived of experiences that foster good self-esteem can have negative impacts for a lifetime, if not addressed. A good self-esteem is not invincible either. Negative events in our life can cause permanent damage to our self-esteem, whether it’s losing a job or heartbreak. Perceived failures are only perceived and working with a therapist is an important first step towards realizing that. Being more assertive, self-aware, and confident are all things that you and your therapist will work on to help you re imagine yourself in a more positive light. Your therapist will identify goals and accomplishments that will help boost your confidence. Self-compassion is one of the most concrete ways of building better self-esteem. Often, we are our own worst critic. Learning to treat ourselves with the same kindness that we would offer to a friend or loved one is a crucial step in seeing ourselves as someone worthy of love and self-worth. In the clouds of our emotions, it is often hard to see the solution that is sitting in front of us. The help of a therapist will give you a clearer perspective of yourself and what is holding you back. We can’t tell you
