  1. Parish WebsitesNovember 2009 A visual overview

  2. Start here • Why do you want to do this; what do you hope to accomplish? Write a one-sentence goal. • How will it relate to your other means of communication? • As you think about this, consider: who is it that you want to reach (target audiences) Consider various groups and interests within current members, those seeking church homes, and unchurched • How do they communicate? • What do they want or need to know (this isn’t necessarily the same as what you want to communicate!) • What do they want to do? • What is their spirituality? • Maintenance: Who will make updates? One person? More than one? How often will it be expected? People who will be responsible for site updates (if in-house) need to be part of the website development process. • What financial resources are available? • Do you want any features to be interactive? Let your website accommodate expansion. • Web site committee/developers/maintenance: Stay in contact with key decision-makers (rector, vestry, treasurer, heads of committees, etc.) and all other sources of information at points all along the journey to final product.

  3. Creating/re-creating the site • One screen for the home page • Navigation that is easy to locate and use; consistent on all pages • Clear hierarchy throughout the site • Clear, simple prose, use action words, broken into chunks • One or two fonts, used consistently. • Appropriately sized photos , 72 -96 dpi, .jpg format; re-size proportionately • Avoid busy backgrounds, illegible text, moving graphics, sound without warning or “no sound” option • Avoid church jargon (i.e. Nave, “The Net”, sacristy, etc.) or explain it • Up to date information; current news, events

  32. Safe Church axioms • Commonly accepted principles of healthy boundaries and safe churches • Adults have more power than children and youth. • Clergy have more power than people with whom they have a pastoral relationship. • The mutuality of friendship cannot exist when there is a disparity of power. • Two unrelated adults must be able to maintain visual contact with each other any time they engage in ministry with children or youth. • Windows in doors allow transparency of interactions with children, youth and adults who may be vulnerable.

  33. General info, digital communication •  All communication sent digitally (email, social networking sites, notes or posts, etc.) is NOT CONFIDENTIAL and may be shared or reposted to others. •  Interactions in the virtual world need to be transparent, as a window in the door provides transparency in the physical world. •  In the virtual world healthy boundaries and safe church practices must be adhered to as they are in the physical world. •  In the virtual world, “friend” can mean anyone with whom you are willing to communicate through that medium. In the physical world, friend can mean much more in terms of intimacy, self disclosure, mutuality and expectations for relationship. •  Laws regarding mandated reporting of suspected abuse/neglect/exploitation of children, youth, elders and vulnerable adults apply in the virtual world as they do in the physical world.

  34. Suggested practices/guidelines • Children and youth • Relationships • Groups • Adults • Relationship • Behavioral covenants • Video chats, blogs • Publishing/posting online • Email, texting, Twitter
