Studies of Asia in the NTCF • Studies of Asia [SoA] is a cross-curricula perspective in the NTCF which can provide a focus for learning and teaching programs • The NTCF provides opportunities for a strong focus on Asia at all levels of the curriculum, including: • EsseNTial Learnings - Collaborative Learner and Constructive Learner Exit Outcomes which focus on developing values and dispositions that support intercultural understandings • specific content in Studies of Society and Environment • Languages other than English • opportunities for including studies of Asia and Australia in learning areas such as The Arts and English

  3. Asia in Schools Support Schools can request support in; • program development • NALSSP grant applications • curriculum auditing • resource development and collation • establishment of community links • staff professional development days and workshops

Contact General Manager CTPoL, (Sue Healy) and Manager Language Services, (Melissa Kosciuk) who approve travel, if request is supported. Once approved, Principal/staff and Asia in Schools Project Officer negotiate final details of support. General Manager of CTPoL contact Manager Language Services and Asia in Schools Project Officer Communication Path for Requests for Support

Current and future opportunities and activities for NT schools Leading 21st Century Schools: Engage with Asia Round 2 ERT funding • ERT funding for schools participating in Round 2 of L21CS • 2 days for 1 teacher or 1 day for 2 teachers to support implementation planning in this project • Fill out the ERT application form and forward to Linda White • Provide a brief outline of what was achieved during the day and your plan for implementation by 12th April 2010

Current and future opportunities and activities for NT schools Asia in Schools Week 2010 Week 2, Term 2 19th -23rd April • Theme for this year will be Experience Asia • Workshops • BYAR Indonesian Musical PD (Darwin 21st April, Alice Springs 23rd April) • offered to schools who have taken up the opportunity to have the Indonesian music group BYAR perform at their school • India Experience (Darwin 22nd April, 4:00pm – 6:30pm) • Principals participating in the Access Asia Study Tour to India in January 2010 have been invited to present on their experiences in India. • Meera Ganeshkumar (DET NT) will speak about the cultural differences between Australia and India • Indonesian Puppet Making (Darwin 23rd April, 3:30pm-6:30pm) • Putu Warti will be explaining the history and significance of Indonesian puppets, she will offer teachers the opportunity to learn how to make puppets and introduce teachers to resources and ideas to use in the classroom in conjunction with the puppets • A Snippet of Japanese culture (Katherine and Alice Springs - date TBC) • Japanese teachers in the Katherine and Alice Springs areas will be sharing their culture and aspects of Japan with fellow teachers

Current and future opportunities and activities for NT schools Asia in Schools Week 2010 Week 2, Term 2 19th -23rd April • Theme for this year will be Experience Asia • Study Tour Subsidies • Applications for study tour subsidies will open this week and will close at the end of Asia in Schools Week (23rd April, 2010) Study Tour subsidies include; Asia in Schools In-country Study Tour Subsidy for teachers • 5 teacher subsidies of $2000 each to participate in an Access Asia Study Tour through the Asia Education Foundation or a school organised study tour Asia in Schools In-country Study Tour Subsidy for teachers • 5 students subsidies of $2000 each to participate in a school organised study tour NALSSP Northern Territory Study Tour Subsidy 2010 for teachers • 1 subsidy of up to $4000 to participate in an Asia Education Foundation Access Asia Study Tour to one of the priority destinations of China, Japan or Korea List of Access Asia study tours is available from Linda White or the Asia Education Foundation website http://www.asiaeducation.edu.au

Current and future opportunities and activities for NT schools NALSSP Subsidy for Further Study Graduate Diploma of Languages (Indonesian or Mandarin) at Charles Darwin University • for DET NT, registered teachers • Subsidy will cover tuition fees for the 3 year course • Course is designed for graduates who wish to complement their qualifications with specialist Indonesian or Mandarin language and cultural awareness training to improve their capacity to communicate and engage effectively with people and country of the target language • Applications open today and close on June 11th 2010

Current and future opportunities and activities for NT schools Asia in Schools in conjunction with the NT Writers Centre, will be offering; • a subsidy for NT schools to attend the NT Writer’s Schools Program • Ten x 4 day passes to teachers on DET news • An afternoon to listen to Asia related writers • Extending an Invite to teachers of Indonesian to attend an Indonesian breakfast with Andrea Hirata

Current and future opportunities and activities for NT schools NALSSP Becoming Asia Literate: Grants to Schools • Applications open on 4 May 2010 • Applications close on 28 May 2010 • Planning for the application can be started now • Assessment panel is currently being gathered • Assistance in writing applications is available locally and federally
