  3. AFFLUENT • Adjective • Wealthy and privileged; well-to-do. • In the more affluent neighborhoods of the city, it is not unusual for people to have three or four luxury cars.

  4. SUPERFLUOUS • Adjective • Additional to what is necessary; extra. • Ruben told me that the last paragraph in my article was superfluous, since the other paragraphs already covered all the important information.

  5. MELLIFLUOUS • Adjective • Sweetly flowing or sounding. • The mellifluous notes of Meg’s song reminded Jack of a gently running brook.

  6. LEV “light”

  7. LEAVEN • Verb • To make less heavy or serious. • No matter how Angela tried to leaven the mood, everyone seemed determined to be miserable.

  8. LEVITY • Noun • Lack of seriousness; jolly or joking manner. • The speaker’s levity seemed out of place at the funeral.

  9. ALLEVIATE • Verb • To make less painful or dangerous. • Alice has developed a home remedy which will alleviate the symptoms of a bad cold.

  10. LAPS “slip, slide”

  11. ELAPSE • Verb • To slip away; go by. • Many years had elapsed, and the farmer was eager to see his homeland again.

  12. COLLAPSE • Noun • Complete failure and ruin. • Some people fear the tax increase will bring about the collapse of the economy.

  13. RELAPSE • Noun • A falling back into an old illness or bad habit. • Since I decided to give up chocolate, I have not had a single relapse.

  14. CED “to move along, to go”

  15. RECEDE • Verb • To move back or away from. • As the ocean waves receded, the people on the shore saw a strange object lying on the sand.

  16. CONCESSION • Noun • Something given up or yielded. • Phil’s parents have already made many concessions to their demanding son, so now they are refusing to give him anything else.

  17. CEDE • Verb • To surrender. • The two nations fought over the land for many years before one finally ceded it to the other.
