  1. Last week Roger reviewed James 2 putting this section into perspective in terms of the temptation agenda put forth in this epistle. Temptation to be quick/swift with a negative response and quick to be irritable and angry (hair trigger) - James 1:19-20 2. Temptation to be only hearers of the word and not doers of the word - James 1:22-25 Temptation to criticize others - James 1:26,27 4. Temptation to show partiality and favoritism - James 2:1-13 Temptation to boast of our faith without works - James 2:14-26 Temptation to misuse & not restrain the tongue - James 3:1-12 7. Temptation to walk in human vs. divine wisdom - James 3:13-18 And today we’re going to begin with the 6th in the list of 7. James 3:1 – ‘My brethren, let not many of you become teachers, knowing that we shall receive a stricter judgment.’ Epistle of James James 3:1-4 “Teachers and Factors in Stumbling” 1 June 9, 2013 Bob Eckel

  2. become or be – present imperative! Why is James expressing this warning? Don’t you think he’s dealing with the motive? knowing (eido – factual knowledge)what? You will receive a stricter judgment (greater condemnation) And from whom is that condemnation, the Lord and/or the body and/or from elsewhere? Do you think that this warning relates to the history of the Jewish leadership (Rom 2:17-24)? But I thought that there was no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus (Rom 8:1)? Nevertheless, there is a greater responsibility isn’t there – Rom 2:20,21. James 3:2 – ‘For we all stumble in many things. If anyone does not stumble in word, he [is] a perfect man, able also to bridle the whole body.’ Epistle of James James 3:1-4 “Teachers and Factors in Stumbling” 2 June 9, 2013 Bob Eckel

  3. stumble might be better translated here as offend In what ways do we stumble or offend? Those who don’t offend are considered perfect Eph 3:15 - Therefore let us, as many as be perfect, have this mind; and if in anything you think otherwise, God will reveal even this to you. Col 1:28 - Him we preach, warning every man and teaching every man in all wisdom, that we may present every man perfect in Christ Jesus. How are you doing here? And those that are perfect are able to bridle the whole body – huh? bridle – hold in check, guide, restrain body – the individual (self) or the church? Self - including the tongue Epistle of James James 3:1-4 “Teachers and Factors in Stumbling” 3 June 9, 2013 Bob Eckel

  4. This means responding by the HS and not reacting in the flesh. Remember, I John 1:8 still applies! The application James 3:13 - Who [is] wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct [that] his works [are done] in the meekness of wisdom. I Cor 9:27 – But I discipline my body and bring [it] into subjection, lest, when I have preached to others, I myself should become disqualified. James 3:3 – ‘Indeed, we put bits in horses' mouths that they may obey us, and we turn their whole body. Look also at ships: although they are so large and are driven by fierce winds, they are turned by a very small rudder wherever the Epistle of James James 3:1-4 “Teachers and Factors in Stumbling” 4 June 9, 2013 Bob Eckel

  5. pilot desires.’ putting bits in horses' mouths and the ships - imperative (behold or indeed) put, though they be driven and are turned about is the result - indicative obey and are driven – present, passive And ships, despite being large and driven by fierce winds, are directed by a small item, the rudder. How does this all relate to us? And we can be bridled but don’t need to be. Psalm 32:9 - Do not be like the horse [or] like the mule, [Which] have no understanding, Which must be harnessed with bit and bridle, Else they will not come near you. And tossed by the wind. Epistle of James James 3:1-4 “Teachers and Factors in Stumbling” 5 June 9, 2013 Bob Eckel

  6. Psalm 107:25-27 What’s the message here? The smallness of that controlling member is of the body - the tongue. The alternative Eph 4:29 - Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers. Gal 6:3 - For if anyone thinks himself to be something, when he is nothing, he deceives himself. The only response is by faith that the Lord is working in you to do of His good pleasure (Phil 2:13)!
