  2. What is Hispanic Heritage Month? Hispanic Heritage Month honors the culture, heritage, and contributions of Hispanic Americans in the United States

  3. Hispanic Population Statistics • About 15% of the total US population said they were Hispanic or Latino

  4. North Carolina’s Hispanic Population • In North Carolina, Hispanics make up about 7% of the population

  5. Hispanic Population Statistics North Carolina recently had one of the highest percentage increases (about 7.4%) in its Hispanic population of anywhere in the country.

  6. North Carolina’s Counties with the highest percent of Hispanics (compared to other population groups) • Duplin (20%) • Lee (15%) • Sampson (15%) • Montgomery (15%) • Chatham (12%) • Durham (12%)

  7. North Carolina’s Cities where at least 10% of the people that live there are Hispanic • Asheboro and Monroe (26%), • Sanford, 23%), • Burlington (16%), • Hickory (15%), • Winston-Salem (13%), • Concord, Durham and Thomasville (12%), • Charlotte (11%). 

  8. Tobacco Use Among Hispanics in NC • 18% of Hispanic adults smoke.

Tobacco Use Among Hispanic Teens • In North Carolina, 12% of Hispanic high school students and 5% of Hispanic middle school youth currently smokes cigarettes. • Studies have shown Hispanic youth are more likely to use smokeless tobacco than other youth groups. • Hispanic youth smoke menthol cigarettes at a higher rate than white youth.

  10. Good News Most Hispanic middle school students in NC don’t think you have more friends if you smoke.

  11. Secondhand Smoke Most Hispanic households protect their children by not allowing smoking in their house.

  12. How does tobacco affect the health of our community? Around 30% of Hispanics die from cardiovascular disease.

  13. How does tobacco affect the health of our community? • Cancer — In 2002, over 20,000 Hispanics died of cancer. • Lung Cancer — About 1,000 Hispanic women and 2,000 Hispanic men died of lung cancer in 2000.

  14. How is tobacco marketed & targeted to members of our community? • Tobacco companies try to get Hispanics and Latinos to use tobacco products. • Some brands that tobacco companies use to attract Hispanic customers are: • Rio • Dorado

  15. Cessation Health care professionals can be very important messengers for helping Hispanics stop smoking.

  16. Tobacco Cessation Among the Hispanic Community • 43% of Hispanics who had ever smoked have quit smoking. • Over half of the current Hispanic smokers want to quit.
