  1. Gravity Chapter 7

  2. Objectives • Be able to explain to the motions of the bodies in the solar system using Newton’s Laws. • Apply Newton’s law of Universal gravitation as it relates to changes in mass and distance. • Understand the magnitude of gravity as a force as it relates to other forces. • Describe the relationship between the tides and the motion of the Moon/Sun/Earth system. • Discuss Einstein’s modifications to Newton’s understanding of gravity. • Explain how the concepts of the Big Bang, the expanding universe, conservation of energy and universal gravitation have lead to theories like dark matter and dark energy.

  3. Newton’s Laws. • Is the Earth accelerating? Why? • Why doesn’t the Earth crash into the Sun? • Does the Earth pull on the Sun?

  4. Draw a free Body diagram.

  5. Questions related to the Earth’s orbit. • What is the difference between rotation and revolution? • Is the Earth’s orbit circular? • Is it hotter when we are closer? • Why is there night and Day? • Does the moon rotate? Revolve?

  6. Other questions • Why are there seasons? • How are the equinox different than the solstice? • Why is it cooler at higher elevations? • Are satellites out of the Earth’s gravitational pull? • What are the lines for the tropic of Cancer and Capricorn?

  7. Why did the apple fall?

  8. How does the force of gravity change? Change the mass. Change the distance. Increase Decrease Double Cut in half. • Increase • Decrease • Double • Cut in half.

  9. Presentation Requirements • Using written notes or a Powerpoint. Explain the topic thoroughly. • Answer all related questions • Provide related facts or details. • Create 2 test questions related to your topic. • Clearly present your topic to the class. • Create a visual to be posted in the hall that explains your topic.
