  1. “It has to be true, because I saw it on the internet!”

  2. How can you trust a website? Why do you care if a website is real or not? Why would someone put up a fake website? Click on this link for student financial aid (FAFSA = financial aid for student assistance is a government program that helps college students get grants and loans to pay for college. It is FREE to apply.) See if you can spot the information that gives clues to the real purpose of this website. (hint – it is a real business, but not tied to the government agency that assigns financial aid to college students)

  3. What to look for: Accuracy of Web documents? • Does the page look neat/organized/professional? • Are there information errors and misspellings? • Have you looked at several different pages to get a good look at the site?

  4. Authority of Web Documents? • Does the author/organization have the knowledge to discuss the topic presented? • Do they make sense or is the information questionable? • Do you need to research this person or organization further before trusting the information? • Have you checked the “About us” (or other similar name) area of the website to get more information about the page sponsor?

  5. Objectivity of Web Documents? • Are the ideas presented in a fair and balanced way? • Do the main points/ideas appear biased? • Is there information that is missing/ appears to be left out? • Is the information “too good to be true”?

  6. Currency of Web Documents? • What is the date that the website was created? • If you can’t find a date, how current does the information appear to be? • Are there any other ways to determine how up to date the information/site could be? • What does it say when a website has not been updated for 3-5 years?

  7. Coverage of the Web Documents? • How well does the overall coverage on this website inform you? • Do the links work? If links are not working, what do you think this means? • Do links take you to other websites that are useful to the original website, or do they appear to be random sites unrelated to this topic?
