Purpose? • AUDIENCE Who was this written for? • PERSPECTIVE Who wrote this document? Carefully read and annotate for SOAP in the Homestead Act and Pacific Railway Act.

Aim: How did the Federal Government encourage westward movement? • HOMESTEAD ACT (1862) gave 160 acres of land to settlers 21 or older to live on the land for 5 years and improve the land. • PACIFIC RAILWAY ACT (1862)  promoted the construction of the transcontinental railroad by Federal Government giving land and loaning money to railroad companies.
