  2. Discussion Points With the partner assigned to you, discuss the following questions about the defeat over Nazi Germany. • Have you ever heard of D-Day? • What do you know about D-Day? • What do you think happened to the leaders of Nazi Germany?

  4. The Tehran Conference • The Big 3 met in Tehran, Iran in late 1943 • Decided the UK and USA would attack occupied France at Normandy in 1944. • USSR promised to help United States against Japan • Agreed to set up a peace keeping organization (Will be the United Nations) • Agreed to split Germany once it is conquered between them

Operation Overlord (Planning the retaking of Europe) • Hitler knew the Allies would attack at some point, so he fortified the coast along the English Channel • Allies set up many diversions to prevent Hitler from knowing where the attack would be • Weather played a major role in determining when the attack would be

D-Day (The Longest Day) • On June 6th, 1944 D-Day commenced • The Allies invaded five beaches in Normandy • Juno, Sword, Omaha, Utah, & Gold • It was the largest amphibious invasion in history • The Germans were caught off guard • It was an enormous Allied victory • The D-Day victory allowed Allied troops access to the ground in Western Europe • This allowed for Allied troops to begin marching in on the Eastern and Western part of Germany

The Battle of the Bulge • It started December 16, 1944 just outside of Germany • More than 6 inches of snow on the ground • Germany started off very strong and the battle looked very grim for the U.S. as their troops were surrounded by Nazi’s • Dwight Eisenhower called on General Patton to rescue the American troops • Patton made incredible time with his troops through the snow and was able to rescue the American soldiers and defeat the Germans • The defeat for Nazi Germany allowed for the Allies to march right into Germany.

The War Ends in Europe • During the Battle of the Bulge, the Soviets were driving Germany back on the Eastern Front. • The Soviets won the race with the Americans and British to Berlin • Hitler died on April 30th, 1945. • Germany officially surrendered on May 7th, 1945. • May 8th, 1945 was proclaimed “Victory in Europe Day”, or “V-E Day”.

Creating the United Nations • The UN was created at the end the War in an effort to put an end to all wars….(peace keeping organization) • It has five power members • France, China, England, USSR, USA • These nations have veto power • The UN also has member nations • These nations may vote and approve of budgets • Each member nation gets one vote • Eleanor Roosevelt

Nuremberg Trials • Nazi leaders were tried in a world court at Nuremberg, Germany following World War II • They were accused of crimes against humanity • 36 were sentenced to death • 114 were sent to prison • “The wrongs we seek to condemn and punish have been so calculated, so malignant and so devastating, that civilization cannot tolerate their being ignored because it cannot survive their being repeated.” ~ Chief Counsel for the United States Robert Jackson
