  1. The Delights of a United States and China Friendship Program-Arvada, CO and Jinzhou, China Arvada Sister Cities International (ASCI) attended the Jinzhou World Landscape & Arts Expo opening on May 10, 2013

  2. Ms. Nina Rupp, ASCI vice-president, and David Anderson, ASCI member, attended the opening ceremony of the 2013 Jinzhou World Landscape Art Exposition, which runs from May to October, 2013. Jinzhou is a harbor city on the Bohai Sea in the northeast of China and our story begins following an easy, three-hour ride on the high-speed train from Beijing. When we arrived at the city’s South Railway Station the first thing we noticed was how beautiful the blue sky appears and how clean the air is in contrast to Beijing.

  3. We were warmly welcomed by Ma and Hawk from the Jinzhou Foreign Affairs Office; our hosts on this visit. They showed usaround before the grand opening of Landscape Expo. Sheridan Hotel Jinzhou We were excited as they brought us to the Sheraton Jinzhou; a beautiful five-star hotel. All meals, lodging and transportation was complimentary.

  4. During our stay we found the staff polite and the service and food exceptional. After checking in, we were invited to a bountiful, private Chinese banquet hosted by Deputy Mayor Ms. JingxiangAn; the first women and minority of a non political party of Jinzhou. We asked Ms. An how she felt working with a male-dominated political government? She smiled and said it is quite a challenge; I am a Korean athlete and engineer but want to represent women and the minority with no political party influence or involvement.

  5. At these banquets, food certainly plays a part in breaking the ice in getting to know each other. We relished passing around plates of fish, lemon grass, dumplings, Chinese cabbage, spicy tofu, purple yams, clams and boiled peanuts, and as we commented on the variety of dishes, conversations between us turned more personal. It was not long before friendships began to develop.

  6. In the evenings we would stroll about the plaza around the high-rise hotel to find plenty of friendly people, some of whom invited us to take part in their nightly dancing-for-exercise class. It’s was so much fun imitating them and working off some of the calories from the earlier banquet!

  7. Before the opening ceremonies took place, I spoke of the desires of ASCI to talk about possibilities regarding economic development, business, education, and culture exchanges between our two cities. The next morning we had a formal meeting with the Jinzhou Economic & Development Board of Directors to discuss these opportunities.

  8. We visited the Jinzhou Bank and had a formal meeting with the Board of Directors to discuss possibilities of business expansion and investments to the United States. They even gave us their banks financial report and bank book. All members of the Board of Directors were educated in the United States and spoke excellent English.

  9. Cheers with Jinzhou’s Board of Education directors and students David chats with two high school students, amazed by their English skills.

  10. Meeting with Bohai University International Exchange College principal, Ms. LiquanGeng and board of directors, to discuss international student exchange opportunities. Currently, there are over 300 foreign students and 300 foreign professors, including US professors. The university built a beautiful western-style housing campus. There are 41,000 students, from under graduates to PHD degrees. In 2008, Arvada delegation visited this university. Since then there have been many changes, especially the improvements of the campus for new student housing. This is now the second largest university in northern China.

  11. Opening CeremonyMay 10, 2013 52,000 visitors around the world attended the opening day ceremony Festivities at the World Landscape Art Exhibition opening Indoor and outdoor Dinosaur Park Pavilion

  12. Huge flower field and tower built up on the surface of the ocean This massive indoor & outdoor park provides transportation carts for all visitors. Park built by Holland

  13. The groundwork for our trip was laid in 2007 when Jinzhou officials visited Arvada to set up the friendship of a Sister Cities relationship. We were fortunate to meet Wei Liu (left), former deputy mayor of the city of Jinzhou. He is now an executive chief inspector at Jinzhou Port where he is in charge of developing 200 areas of land at the port and plans to build a warehouse to store imported goods from around the world. He is interested in importing high quality building materials. Mr. Banqiang Zhang (Center), visited Arvada in 2007. He is now the deputy mayor of Linghai City, a new development city of Jinzhou County. We visited that city hall, which is built like the White House in Washington, DC. Mr. Fugui Liu (Right), visited Arvada in 2007, he is a deputy director for the Jinzhou Foreign Affairs office.
