  2. 1.Reinforcing and reducing by twirling and rotating the needle • The reinforcing: by rotating the needle gently and slowly with small amplitude and lower frequency using the thumb to twirl the needle forward and the index finger to twirl it backward. • The reducing: by rotating the needle forcefully with a larger amplitude and higher frequency using the thumb to twirl the needle backward and the index finger to twirl it forward.

  3. 1.Reinforcing and reducing by twirling and rotating the needle • Application: The reinforcing method is used to treat asthenia syndromes. The reducing manipulation is used to treat Sthenia syndromes. • Cautions: should not to rotate and twirl to one direction.otherwise lead to the stuck needle.

  4. 2.Reinforcing and reducing by lifting and thrusting the needle • The reinforcing method is performed by briefly thrusting the needle forcefully and lifting it gently using a smaller amplitude. • The reducing method is performed by lifting the needle forcefully and thrusting the needle gently with a larger amplitude .

  5. 2.Reinforcing and reducing by lifting and thrusting the needle • Application: The reinforcing method can guide the Yang qi coming inside for enriching the Yang.It is used to treat asthenia syndromes. The reducing method can guide the Ying qi coming out for expeling the evil influence. It is used to treat thenia syndromes.

  6. 3.Reinforcing and reducing by rapid and slow insertion and withdrawal of the needle • The reinforcing method : By inserting the needle to a given depth slowly and lifting it rapidly beneath the skin. • The reducing method : By inserting the needle to a given depth swiftly and lifting it slowly beneath the skin. • Application: To regulate the ying and yang.can be used to treat asthenia and sthenia syndromes. • Cautions: To be used with lifting and thrusting method.

  7. 4.Reinforcing-reducing by puncturing along or against the direction of the channel • The reinforcing method : By guiding the needle tip along the direction of the course of the channel. • The reducing method : By making the needle tip against the direction of the course of the channel.

  8. 4.Reinforcing-reducing by puncturing along or against the direction of the channel • Application: The puncture is applied by running against the flowing direction of the merdian qi ,to reduce and eliminate the xie qi,so as to weaken the hyperactive condition. The puncture is applied by running along the flowing direction of the merdian qi,to reinforce and benefit the zheng qi,so as to strengthen the hypoactive condition. • Cautions:It is the main leading principles of reinforcing and reducing manipulation in acupuncture.

  9. 5.Reinforcing-reducing manipulation by means of respiration • For reinforcing: Insert the needle when the patient breathes out and withdraw it when the patient breathes in. • For reducing: The opposite way of practice. • Application: Respiration can be cooperate by other reinforcing-reducing manipulation for making the blood-qi moving smoothly.It is used to treat meridians and viscera disease. • Cautions: To ask the patient breathing deeply and slowly.It is better for us do it with the patient regulating of breathing at the same time.

  10. 6.Reinforcing-reducing by keeping the needled acupoint open or close • After the needle is withdrawn • For reinforcing: Pressing the acupoint quickly to close it. • For reducing: Shaking the needle to enlarge the needled hole without pressing. • Application: Do not single use it. Should do it with other reinforcing-reducing manipulation.
