  2. A Guide for Solving Number Stories 1. Understand the problem: • Read the problem • What do you know? What do you want to find out? • Do you have all the info to solve the problem?

  3. 2. Plan what to do: • Can I use a picture or graph? • Can I write a number model or make a table? • Can I use “counters” or some other tool? • Can you estimate the answer?

  4. 3. Carry out the plan: • After you decide what to do BE CAREFUL!! • Write it out and answer the question

  5. 4. Look Back: • Does your answer make sense??? • Look back at your estimate!! Label!!

  6. Example: If you drive at an average speed of 50 miles per hour, how far will you travel at 3 hours? Numbers Needed: 50, 3 Open Sentence: 50 x 3 = m Solution: 150 Answer: 150 miles
