  2. Context In 1606, when the Godspeed, Susan Constant, and Discovery landed in the Chesapeake Bay dreams of wealth filled the minds of those aboard. Using the Spanish model of colonial development the English meant to keep pace and settle in the New World with trade access, abundant resources, and contact with the Native tribes.
  3. Location What factors should you take into consideration when determining location to settle? Resources Enemies (Protection) Soil Exposure
  4. Brackish Water
  5. Relations Chief Powhatan- Powhatan nation Superior Technology/Inferior numbers What type of relations would you create with Powhatan? Trade (guns, weapons) Food (you do not have) Neutral How do you think colonists felt?
  6. Protection How would you protect your colony? What type of structure would you build? What factors would you have to take into consideration?
  7. Laws/Rules How would you keep order? What rules would you implement and what would be the punishment for infraction of the rules? Should leaders direct, or should they become a part of the labor process? http://www.nps.gov/jame/historyculture/martial-law.htm
  8. REsources You came to the New World to search for precious metals. Finding precious metals in this region would provide wealth and status for your colony. However, you also have to survive. Breaking down your workforce what percentage would you allocate (out of 100%) to the following: Fishing Hunting Agriculture Gold/Silver/Gem mining
  9. Agriculture Common English diet during the 17th century consisted largely of meat, wheat and sassafras. What would you focus on growing in your colony? What would be the limitations? (Cows, sheep, soil, climate)
  10. Desperation Regardless of your best efforts to survive your colony is decimated by disease and native attack. You are starving…. During this time dead bodies are abundant would you use them as a food source? (Cannibalism) Would you eat a family member?
  11. Decisions Native aggression No Gold Starving Times Change of focus needed. Do you stay? If so, what is your new focus? Economics, survival, war, or a combination? Pocahontas myth /truth (Optional)
  12. What Would You Do? Complete the brief simulation to understand decisions colonists had to faceand discuss the “Now we Know” section that analyzes your choices as a class.
  13. Teaching objectives To review the foundation and basic history of the Jamestown Colony. To introduce decisions and obstacles colonists faced during the development of Jamestown. Review Powhatan influence in the region. Review where Jamestown was settled and why. Review the Starving Time. Review the reasons Jamestown almost failed. Review how tobacco, martial law and war/negotiations with Powhatan led to the growth of the colony. Optional- Pocahontas myth.
  14. Pacing/Sequence Write on the board/overhead. “What happened at Jamestown in 1606?” List their predictions on the board to see how much retention they have of the subject. (10-20 student predictions) 10 min Read the textbook account pg. . Is this accurate compared to their predictions (discuss) 5 min Begin power point. Students can work with table partner to share thoughts and questions during power point review. I allow 2 min discussion per question slide (8 slides I use are Location, Relations, Protections, Laws and Rules, Resources, Agriculture, Desperation and Decisions. 16-20 min Have students as a group (since they do not have computers) vote per scenario as you introduce the simulation link “What would you do?” (Slide 17) Click on the Jamestown Online Adventure logo and it will take you to the site. Compare and discuss. Hopefully students will not be too far off the colonists decisions based on the lesson and previous knowledge. Homework- I am going to give students article from summer trip I wrote to read. (Next slide)
