  4. Text with grammar : Paragraph One My name’s Mark Holloway and, as you can probably guess, I’m an English teacher. Although I’m originally from somewhere near Birmingham, Britain’s second city, I now consider London to be my home. I’ve been a teacher for eleven years and now divide my time between working at the University of Essex and overseas. Last year, for example, I spent some time in Japan, teaching English at Yokohama City University, and I’m keen to work in Asia again in the future.

  5. Text with grammar : Paragraph Two I’ve recently moved into a cottage in Wivenhoe, which is about a thirty minute walk from the campus. I quite like living in Wivenhoe but it’s very quiet compared to London. Fortunately there’s a decent rail service into the capital so I’ll be able to see my London friends regularly, and I’ll never be too far away from my favourite Chinese restaurants.

  6. Text with grammar : Paragraph Three When I was at university, I studied English Language and Literature, and later did an MA in English Studies before becoming a teacher. The English language is still a passion for me, but these days I spend more time listening to music and watching films than reading literature. The true love of my life, though, is football. I support West Bromwich Albion, a football team that has broken my heart more times than I can remember.

  9. Can you answer ANY of these questions? (it's OK to say “don't know” but there's no harm in guessing) • How old is the University of Essex? • How highly rated is teaching at the university? • How many academic departments offer postgraduate courses? • Is it possible to study acting at the University of Essex? • Can you name any British film directors? • What's the university's postcode?

  10. A child of the sixties, Essex has matured into a striking fortysomething adult with an impressive reputation among researchers and scholars of international distinction. The university is currently rated sixth nationally for teaching quality and tenth for research in latest UK assessments. The graduate school was opened in October 1966 and Essex now runs 17 academic departments that range from accounting to sociology and theatre studies. Offering a full menu of postgraduate courses, Essex delivers masters degrees in arts (MA), science (MSc), law (LLM), research (MRes), environmental studies (MEnv) and PhDs. Aside from its main Colchester campus, the university runs East 15 Acting School based at its smaller Wivenhoe Park campus, in Loughton. The school, which offers an MA Dip in acting and one in acting for the media, has caught the eye of writer and film director Mike Leigh who says: "The contribution of East 15 actors to the British theatre, television and film over the past three decades has been considerable. Several generations of brilliant young actors and actresses have come out of this highly original conservatoire." There are also a number of other renowned academic centres and institutes at Essex including the American Studies Centre, Children's Legal Centre, English Language Teaching Centre and Human Rights Centre. Details of application procedures are available from the Postgraduate Admissions Office, University of Essex, Wivenhoe Park, Colchester, Essex, CO4 3SQ. Nick says: "Earlier this year the university launched its Centre for Computational Finance and Economic Agents (CCFEA) to provide a formal link with financial service practitioners. It will ensure opportunities to link theory and practice through new masters degrees in computational finance and computational agent networks and e-markets. "Participants will benefit from a rigorous training in the principles of quantitative finance and microeconomics, along with computational skills in the design and testing of real time trading systems."
