  1. Irregular preterite:oír, leer, creer, & destruir i2y verbs Realidades 2, p250

  2. Review • Remember that the preterite has different conjugations than the present tense to let us know that this is in a different time.

  3. Review • There were three basic groups of past tense – AR, ER/IR, and irregular. Which is a combination of the other two.

  4. Review • Some of the irregular verbs up to this point include ir, dar & ver • Also had verbs ending in –car, gar, zar

  5. Irregular Preterite • Here is a new set of conjugated verbs that don’t seem to fit the previous patterns: • Notice the accent marks • Over the “i” in all other forms. Over the “o” in the 3rd singular. • Notice that the third person is the irregular form – it gets a y WHY THE Y?

  6. WHY THE Y? • Look at how the verb would be conjugated otherwise… • Think about how you would pronounce these verbs… • Similar to the sound issues with –car, -gar, & -zar, these i2Y verbs change the spelling to make it easier to say. creyó creyeron leyó leyeron

  7. Irregular preterite New rule – ER & IR will change i y in the third person preterite So now that you know why the y, how do you explain this present tense verb? Present preterit Right, these verbs in the present tense are doing the same thing. They are making it easier to say by adding in the y.

  8. Irregular preterite • One more thing… • Destruir is conjugated like oír, creer, and leer and other ER/IR verbs with a vowel before the preterite ending, EXCEPT that the tú, nosotros, and vosotros forms do not have accent marks. • Where have we seen this before? with regular preterite accents.
