  2. Many verbs do not follow the normal rules of conjugation in the preterite. These verbs are irregular in the preterite. Let’s look at these verbs:

  3. Fui Fuiste Fue Fuimos Fueron Ir—to go

  4. Fui Fuiste Fue Fuimos Fueron Ser—to be

  5. Did you notice that ir and ser have the exact same preterite forms?

  6. Fui Fuiste Fue Fuimos Fueron Ir/ser—to go/to be

  7. Di Diste Dio Dimos Dieron Dar—to give

  8. Vi Viste Vio Vimos Vieron Ver—to see

  9. Did you notice that dar and ver have the same endings? They are only different by 1 letter.

  10. Hice Hiciste Hizo Hicimos Hicieron Hacer—to make; to do

  11. Vine Viniste Vino Vinimos Vinieron Venir—to come

  12. Quise Quisiste Quiso Quisimos Quisieron Querer*--to want (*meaning changes in the preterite)

  13. The “i” verbs • Hacer • Venir • Querer These verbs have an “i” in their preterite stem.

  14. Pude Pudiste Pudo Pudimos Pudieron Poder*—to be able to(*meaning changes in the preterite)

  15. Puse Pusiste Puso Pusimos Pusieron Poner—to put

  16. Supe Supiste Supo Supimos Supieron Saber—to know (facts, information, how to do something)

  17. Cupe Cupiste Cupo Cupimos Cupieron Caber—to fit

  18. The “u” verbs • Poder • Poner • Saber • Caber These verbs all have a “u” in their preterite stem.

  20. Tuve Tuviste Tuvo Tuvimos Tuvieron Tener*—to have(changes meaning in the preterite)

  22. “uv” verbs • Andar • Tener • Estar • These verbs have “uv” in their preterite stems

  23. Dije Dijiste Dijo Dijimos Dijeron Decir—to say; to tell

  24. Traje Trajiste Trajo Trajimos Trajeron Traer—to bring

  25. Produje Produjiste Produjo Produjimos Produjeron Producir—to produce(also all –ucir verbs)

  26. The “j” verbs • All of the stems have a “j” in their spelling • There is no “i” in the ellos/ellas/Uds. ending

  27. SIDVQPATCHES • One way to remember the irregular verbs is to memorize the acronym “SIDVQPATCHES”
