  3. PharmD/PhD • PhD Overview • To earn a PhD • 1.) Master a specific subject completely • 2.) Extend the body of knowledge about that subject (research & dissertation) • Highest academic degree anyone can earn • Earning a Ph.D. is training for research

PharmD/PhD • Additional Information • PCAT and GRE • Some schools require you to have bachelors before accepted into PharmD/PhD program • Apply to the dual degree program during first three professional years in PharmD program • Additional tuition rates vary (0 to over $10,000) • Some schools offer stipend while completing PhD courses. Fulltime stipend awarded for remaining PhD classes after PharmD completed

  6. PharmD/PhD • Without dual degree program, 6 years for the Pharm.D. (2+4) and, on average, an additional 5 years for the Ph.D. Add to this a 2−3 year postdoctoral experience • With dual degree program about 8 years

PharmD/MS • Master of Science • Degree focuses on advanced pharmacy practice and science • The PharmD-MS program combines a professional and graduate degree program to allow students to obtain both their Doctor of Pharmacy (Pharm.D.) and Master of Science (M.S.) degrees. This program is designed to prepare pharmacists for careers in pharmaceutical education, research, industry, and related areas of specialized practice.

PharmD/MS • Careers • Clinical Research • The Doctor of Pharmacy/Master of Science in Clinical Research (PharmD/MSCR) joint degree program allows students to apply certain credits from the PharmD curriculum towards the requirements of the MSCR degree, and to apply MSCR courses to PharmD elective requirements.  • Students in this program can earn a professional pharmacy degree and a Master of Science in Clinical Research degree concurrently. These students may elect to design their research project in collaboration with their Clinical Preceptor during an appropriate fourth year clerkship, an option that is not available to students pursuing separate PharmD and MSCR degrees.

PharmD/MS • Careers Continued • Pharmaceutical Sciences ( 4 main branches: pharmacology, pharmaceutical chemistry, pharmaceutics, and pharmacognosy) • The Doctor of Pharmacy/Master of Science in Pharmaceutical Sciences (PharmD/MSPS) joint degree program is especially suited to to individuals who hold a Bachelor of Science in either pharmaceutical sciences or natural sciences such as chemistry, biology or physics. Acceptance into the MSPS program a year prior or at the same time of entry into the PharmD program is allowed. Completion of both degrees is possible in a total of four years, but some students may take five years.

PharmD/MBA • These programs have 2 primary objectives: • To instill in students the business background and skills necessary to enter management positions within pharmacy • To allow students to earn an MBA degree in less time and at a lower expense than if they were to pursue the 2 degrees independently. The dual degree is considered highly desirable for persons seeking careers in institutional practice settings, the pharmaceutical industry, pharmacy benefit management organizations, and academia.

  17. PharmD/MPA • Master of Public Administration • Provides training in public policy and program implementation. This involves learning sound management, analytical, and policy-making skills • Focus on public administration at the local, state, national/federal levels, as well as in the nonprofit sector

  18. PharmD/MPA • Schools • Drake (Iowa) – Requires one extra semester to complete the dual degree • Kentucky – Complete in your 4 years with an addition of 2 summer sessions • Missouri–Kansas City* • Tests • PCAT & GRE

PharmD/MPA • The MPA degree is interdisciplinary. • It covers wide range of fields that pertain to the public such as economics, sociology, anthropology, and political science. • Courses typically include: • microeconomics public finance, research methods/statistics, policy process and policy analysis, ethics, public management, leadership, and program evaluation or performance measurement.

  20. PharmD/MPA • Careers • Professional trained drug analyst • Develop and implement cost-effective pharmaceutical programs in hospitals, healthcare delivery systems and government health programs.

PharmD/MPH • Master of Public Health • Prepares pharmacist to dispense medications and manage disease states within a population-based public health framework • Contributes to the development and implementation of policy to provide safer medications to patients • Relates to pharmacotherapy and health promotion, disease prevention, and medication safety

  22. PharmD/MPH • Skills • Educate and assist patients to manage diseases such as diabetes • Conduct research to better manage treatments for diseases such as cancer and HIV • Provide education on medication management, such as drug interactions between prescription drugs and herbal supplements.

PharmD/MPH • Global Health Track • Some schools offer different MPH options, including an option to concentrate on Global Health • Opportunity to deal with public health issues that cross international borders • Emphasis of study on underserved populations with a background in social and cultural issues • Offers a look at public health in a more diverse setting with opportunities to work with patients in a different country • Some schools also offer a Global Health Graduate Studies Certificate

PharmD/MPH • Careers • Official government agencies, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), local or state health departments • Not-for-profit organizations that focus on health issues like heart disease, cancer, children health, global and preventative health care • Private sector jobs in the pharmaceutical industry and health insurance companies • Academic institutions

  25. PharmD/JD • Juris Doctor • Typically takes 6 years vs. 7 if degrees were pursued individually. (4 – PharmD; 3 JD) • You will usually have to apply to both the pharmacy and law school separately, stating interest in dual degrees. You will begin the JD during your 2nd or 3rd year in pharmacy school. • You will have to take the LSAT (Law School Admissions Test)

PharmD/JD • Careers • Work for pharmaceutical & biotechnology as their attorney, government agencies (FDA,) private practice, patent law, and many more. • Private practice – Know both sides of the story. With legal background AND medical background, you can help many people or companies in lawsuits. • FDA – You will be knowledgeable about the drug approval process (in addition to the drug itself) and can potentially help develop new incentives to speed up the approval of new drugs and policies. Example: regulation and labeling of tobacco products.
