  1. Finishing up Decolonization Just a few last things…

  2. As we have discussed, some colonies gained their independence through negotiation. • Like who. Give me an example…

  3. However… • Some colonies achieved their independence through armed struggle. • Example: Angola from the Portuguese

  4. Migration after Independence • Migration of former colonial subjects to imperial metropoles maintained cultural & economic ties between the colony and the metropole even after the dissolution of empires. • Examples: Algerians to France, Filipinos to US & South Asians to Britain • Why did they move?

  5. Reasons for South Asians in Britain • 1. Manuel laborers were recruited to fulfill labor shortages after WWII. • 2. Workers arrived in late 50’s early 60’s to work in the manufacturing and service sector • Remember the move towards white collar jobs after WWII?? Someone still has to fill in the gaps of blue collar or manual labor

  6. 3. The Commonwealth Immigrants Act – 1962 • Changed the character of the migration • By 1970, 3/4th = women & children • 4. 60s and 70s - large numbers of East African Asians, who already held British passports, entered the UK after they were expelled from newly independent African Countries

  7. HOMEWORK: • Make a Venn Diagram summarizing and connecting India, Africa, and Latin America’s move to Independence (3 items in each big circle and 2 in each connecting space) • Reading Notes = • pgs. (839-846)
