  2. Mission • “To lead a kindness revolution that transforms the way people relate to animals, nature, and each other.”

History of Best Friends Animal Society • Started in the late 1980s • Best Friends reachesacross the nation and around the world, helping localcommunities to rescue animals in distress and to set up, spay/neuter, shelter, foster, and adoption programs in cities across the nation. • They find homes for dogs and cats that are considered unadoptable. • They go to shelters and homes and pick out dogs or cats that have mental or physical problems and place them in a loving home.

Accomplishments • They reduced the death rate of animals in shelters from 17 million a year to about 5 million per year. • They helped during Hurricane Katrina and with natural disasters in saving the lives of animals and placing them into foster homes. • Even though this entirely nonprofit organization, Best Friends Network has built animal sanctuaries all across the U.S. • Best Friends Animal Society is the largest no-kill sanctuary in the US providing international support to the animal welfare movement.
