  1. AFIT SE Programs and Research Dr Dave Jacques Dept of Systems and Engineering Mgt AFIT/ENV

  2. AFIT SE History ABET • SE - Long history at AFIT • ABET accredited over 30 years • Secretary of Air Force James Roche • Develop plan to strengthen Air Force’s systems engineering capabilities • Air Force Center for Systems Engineering (CSE) est. Feb 2003 http://www.afit.edu/cse/ • IDE SE program revamped in 2003 • Active involvement of SE Subcommittee to AFIT BOV • AF SAB study examined the program in 2004 • Program oversight now by CSE Senior Council (Oct 06)

  3. Family of SE Programs AFIT SE programs serve a wide audience • Graduate SE Certificate (part-time, DL, other programs) • Graduate Systems Engineering Program (GSE) • Nominally a six quarter (18 month) program • Students complete 12 quarter hours thesis • Available for part-time students via Distance Learning (DL) • Intermediate Developmental Education SE Program (ISE) • Majors selected for resident Professional Military Education (PME) • Nominally a four quarter (12 month) program • Students complete 9 quarter hours project • PhD Program • Nominally a 36-month program, including 1-2 years of research

  4. Engineers with Systems Perspective SE Masters “Recipe for Success” SE Core + Specialization/Domain + Project SE Process & Design Space Systems Mechanical Aero/Astro Software Engineering Airborne Systems AF/DoD Sponsored Research Electrical … Software Systems Architecture Cyber Systems Others… SE Management Thesis/ Design Project SE Core Specialization • Note: Overall MS Program also include a Math course, and an Analysis course • Individuals with non-technical BS degrees may be admitted, but generally require math and other preparatory courses in addition to MS program requirements

  5. Program Educational Objectives The SE program takes students with traditional engineering backgrounds (mechanical, electrical, aerospace, etc.) and produces graduates who can effectively use the tools and techniques of both systems science and traditional engineering disciplines to approach and analyze complex problems, design feasible solutions, and select appropriate solutions. Specific objectives are as follows: • A graduate will understand the role of a Systems Engineer, both as it applies to the government organization as well as their counterparts in industry. • A graduate will have a thorough understanding of the Systems Engineering process, from mission area analysis through requirements definition and system development, sustainment and retirement. • A graduate will have the base knowledge to become proficient with many of the tools for implementing the SE process, to include development of system architectures, tradeoff and decision analysis, risk management and test planning. • A graduate will have the skills to effectively participate in the evaluation of both competing designs as well as proposed processes from competing contractors. • A graduate will develop a detailed understanding in at least one domain area, such as space systems, C4ISR systems, or airborne systems. Create Smart Buyers!

  6. Systems Engineering Core 1 SE Process & Design (SENG 520) 2 Intro S/W Engineering (CSCE593/590) 3 System Architecture (SENG 640) 4 SE Management (SENG 610) Concept Definition & Systems Analysis (SENG 653) 4 Post Acquisition (M/S B)   Pre Acquisition (M/S B)

  7. Specialty / Domain • Space Systems • Airborne Systems • Cyber Warfare Systems • C4ISR Systems • Logistic Systems • Test and Evaluation • Advanced Geospatial Intelligence • Directed Energy Weapons • Software Engineering • System Estimation and Control • Reliability • Optimization • Decision Analysis • Modeling and Simulation Top picks Intro to SE Space Systems Software Engineering Airborne Systems AF/DoD Sponsored Research Systems Architecture Cyber Systems Others… SE Mgt. Capstone Design Project SE Core Specialization

  8. Group SE Thesis/ Projects • SE Program assigns groups of 3-7 students to broad design/research projects of relevance, sponsored by: • Unified Commands, Air Force Major Commands, Operational Squadrons, Acquisition Product Centers/ Program Offices, and Air Force Research Laboratory Fatigue Cracks Detected by PZT Sensors

  9. AFIT SE Research Thrusts • Member of SE Research Center (SERC) • Early Application of SE • System of System (SoS) analysis and evaluation • DoD Architectures for technical decision making • Interoperability /Modularity measurement • Concept Evaluation • Human System Integration • Allocation of human activity in conceptual design • Human centered design tools • Applied Design for mission effectiveness • Multi-UAV concepts • Integrated Health Monitoring

  10. Early Systems Engineering Metrics – Modularity/ Flexibility • Modularity metrics – (Stryker, Oyama, Jacques) • Builds upon other published work in modularity for product design • Metrics include reusability, reconfigurability, extensibility • Relating metrics to higher level MOE’s • Proof of concept applications looking at modular munitions • Relating modularity measures to field assembly/check-out times • Investigating use as a predictive tool for Operationally Responsive Space conceptual design

  11. Evaluating Concepts/ Estimating Uncertainty in CONOPs • Architecture-based evaluation (Jacques, Colombi) • Applied to Electronic Warfare, Bomb Damage Assessment, and Intelligence, Surveillance, Reconnaissance mission areas Rules Model

  12. Multiple UAV/ Cooperative Control Systems Research • OVERALL OBJECTIVES • Develop CONOPS and conceptual architectures for multiple UAV/ cooperative control • Create a test bed for hands-on cooperative control research • Evaluate UAS algorithms and concepts Concept of Operations Test Bed Flight Testing at Camp Atterbury, IN Conceptual Architecture Control Algorithm Development and Testing Fixed-Sensor Aimpoint Flight Plan Algorithm Cooperative Arrival and Orbit Algorithm Analysis of Relay/Rover for Beyond Line-of-Sight Ops Collision Avoidance Algorithm Relay Aircraft

  13. Summary • AFIT SE research program is growing • Good balance of basic and applied research • DoD sponsored work supporting acquisition, sustainment and operational communities • AFIT faculty and students provide perspective unmatched in civilian universities • Students know DoD challenges because they live them • Military/civilian faculty mix provides balance between new initiatives and sustained research in depth • AFIT research strengths • Architecture, early application of SE • Human System Integration • Applied design for mission effectiveness
