  1. ASHRAE Annual Conference Sustainability Project Denver Rescue Mission Energy Efficiency Upgrades 1130 Park Avenue West, Denver, CO 80205 Learn More @ www.ASHRAEDenver2013.org 2013

  2. WHO... Our local ASHRAE chapter membership community WHAT... In-depth energy assessment, technical design assistance, and the potential for high efficiency system installations WHY... Since 2008, each host city ASHRAE chapter has conducted a sustainability demonstration project of their choosing 2013

  3. The Project • 3-story, 23,000 sq.ft. building built in 1928 • Tens of thousands of people come to this facility each year for shelter, food, and support

  4. The Facility • Offices, two chapels, a library, a kitchen, a clinic, a dormitory and other ancillary spaces • 3 meals per day, dorms open each night

  5. HVAC Systems • Large boilers and steam radiators with old valves • Constant volume make-up air unit (MAU) for dorms • Constant exhaust for showers • (4) split system AC units (offices, library, clinic) • (4) evap cooling units (dorm, chapel, dining room)

  6. Historical Energy Use 2013

  7. Utility Data • High EUI and Cost

  8. Utility Data • Typical profile but high use

  9. Project Goals: • Help the facility operate more sustainably with lower energy use and better Indoor Air Quality - Lower annual energy costs over 30%

  10. Energy Efficiency Upgrades • Lighting Upgrade • Replacement of (4) Split Systems • Installation of DDC System • Steam System Upgrades • Replacement of MAU with ERV • Replacement of (2) DHW Heaters, Increased Capacity, Low Flow Shower Heads • Installation of Solar DHW System 2013

  11. ECM: Lighting Upgrade • Currently 2 and 4-ft T-12 with magnetic ballasts • Older exterior lights • Limited occupancy sensors • Older Exit Signs • Project: Upgrade fixtures and add sensors

  12. ECM: Replace Split Systems • Replacing (4) units - offices, library, clinic • New units are 21 SEER* @ ARI Conditions *SEER = cooling output during a typical cooling-season divided by the total electric energy input during the same period(BTU/W*hr)

  13. ECM: Installation of DDC System • Tie together HVAC equipment, zone thermostats, on/off enable • Provide equipment scheduling, temperature control, unoccupied setback, and remote access

  14. ECM: Steam System Upgrades • Thermostatic valves and steam traps in disrepair • Replace valves and steam traps • Address system leaks

  15. ECM: Replacement of Make-Up Air Unit (MAU) with Energy Recovery Ventilator (ERV) • Tie restroom exhaust into ERV to capture heat • Continuous ventilation for better IAQ

  16. ECM: Replacement of (2) DHW Heaters, Increased Capacity, Low Flow Showers • Currently only (2) 80 gal tanks • Adding more capacity and upgrading to 86% efficiency
