  1. Retrieval of Time-Varying Land Cover and Vegetation Properties from MODIS in Support of the NCEP-WRF Land Surface Model Year 1 Progress Report Mark Friedl, Angela Martin, Bin Tan, Bruce Anderson Department of Geography & Environment Center for Remote Sensing Boston University

  2. Project Overview • Key Objectives • Provide updated land data sets to NCEP • for use in Noah land model • based on MODIS land products suite • Evaluate differences with existing AVHRR data sets • Assess influence on Noah land model performance

  3. Deliverables: Land Cover • Global; 1 km; Static; Gap filled • SiB/UMd classes • Investigating provision of USGS classes Current 0.125o land cover used in NLDAS

  4. Deliverables: Albedo • Global; 1,2 km, 0.05 Degrees; Gap filled • 16-day climatology based on 2000-2005 • Black sky (beam); White sky (diffuse) • Broadband (0.4-3.5); visible (0.4-0.7); SWIR(0.7-3.5) 0.125oAlbedo for June used in NLDAS

  5. Deliverables: Leaf Area Index • Global • 1 km • Gap filled • 8-day climatology based on 2000-2005 • Scheduled to begin work in Summer 2005

  6. Progress to Date: Land Cover • Data Set for UMd/SiB classes mostly complete • Currently comparing MODIS LC against existing NLDAS LC data set from AVHRR • Require: • NCEP global land cover data set for comparison • Feedback regarding semantics of class definitions • e.g.: “groundcover” = grassland; tundra class? • Target: • Deliver final data sets to NCEP by end of year 1 funding (July 31)

  7. Progress to Date: Albedo • Data compilation ongoing: near completion • Data sets include • 2 km, 16-day global gap-filled climatology for ’00-04 • Courtesy of Eric Moody, Mike King, Crystal Schaaf et al • Waiting for spectral/white sky data sets (end of April) • 1 km, 16-day global from original product • Includes missing values • Spatially averaged 16-day 0.05 degree CMG • Currently evaluating different data sets • Target: Deliver final data sets to NCEP by end of year 1 funding (July 31)

  8. Sample Results: Land Cover NLDAS Land Cover @ 1/8 Degrees MODIS Land Cover @ 1/8 Degrees

  9. NLDAS vs MODIS Land Cover Different Representations/Distributions Land Cover at 1/8 Degree Land Cover at 1 km

  10. Sample Results: Albedo • 2-Km Average Albedo for June from MODIS

  11. Results: Albedo • 1/8 Degree Average Albedo for June from MODIS

  12. Sample Results: Albedo • 1/8 Degree NLDAS Albedo for June

  13. Sample Results: Albedo • Comparison between NLDAS albedo and MODIS at 1/8 degree

  14. Sample Results: Albedo • Comparison between NLDAS albedo and MODIS at 1/8 degree

  15. Sample Results: Albedo Comparison bwtn 1 km MODIS albedo and 1/8 degree NLDAS albedo NLDAS Albedo has positive bias and reduced dynamic range relative to MODIS albedo

  16. Future Plans/Timeline • Land cover • Finalize SiB land cover database & deliver to NCEP summer 2005 • Continue work on USGS database • Albedo • Continue analysis of MODIS albedo products • Comparison with existing NCEP datasets • Deliver global database summer 2005 • Leaf Area Index • Initial dataset compilation has been initiated • Plans to increase effort in this area in Year 2 (starting late summer 2005) • Modeling analyses • using Noah model to assess sensitivity of model to land cover, albedo, LAI
