Linking the IB with Higher Ed systems • 15 US States currently have state IB programme policies: • California Oklahoma • Colorado South Carolina • Florida South Dakota • Georgia Texas • Kentucky Utah • Minnesota Wisconsin • North Carolina Wyoming • North Dakota Each awards system-wide admission recognition/college course credit for IB. Most (8) provide scholarship/tuition waivers for IB students/weighted GPA for IB Courses, and (6) IB diploma/courses recognized as option for high school core curriculum requirements.

  30. Linking the IB with Higher Ed systems 6 US states are currently developing state policies: • Alabama • Arizona • Indiana • Kentucky • Oregon • Tennessee

  31. US Diploma Recognition: Strong Policy For example: College of Idaho Drury University Highpoint University Oregon State University University of California University of Tulsa University of Nebraska – Lincoln Western Washington University …Check policy charts at http://ibo.org/ibna/ibnarecognition/recognitionpolicy/ and online postings at http://ibo.org/country/US/index.cfm

  42. Recognition of the International Baccalaureate A Canadian University Perspective CIS Forum - Munich 2009 Karen McKellin Director International Student Initiative The University of British Columbia Vancouver/Kelowna CANADA

  43. IB in Canada • Per capita, Canada world leader in number of IB schools and IB students, with 289 schools, of which 131 offer the Diploma • IB schools now in every province in Canada (newest in Prince Edward Island in 2009) • Growing fastest in Ontario and Nova Scotia; well-established in BC with 15 schools • Canadian IB schools - mix of public and independent schools • Canadian universities have well-developed IB recognition policies in place • Most offer some advanced credit towards first year university coursework; • 17 Canadian universities offer 2nd year standing

  44. IB curriculum – aligns well with Canadian values Canada is a small, culturally- diverse nation. It is vital to our future that our children develop: • International mindedness while understanding and appreciating their own cultural and national identity • The ability to speak another language (than French or English) • A life-long commitment to community service so necessary for civil and sustainable Canadian society

  45. UBC and IB • The 2008 entering class of IB Diploma students at UBC represented 185 schools and 53 countries • This year UBC saw a 12.5% in numbers of students admitted on basis of IB Diploma

  46. UBC admission of IB students • Completed IB Diploma -- offers made on anticipated grades provided by school in February or March • No other exam results required (SAT or ACT, etc.) • Standing in at least three HL courses and three SL, including English, and program (degree) pre-requisites • Admission average calculated on full IB Diploma score including additional points for Extended Essay and TOK • A final grade of 5 or better on IB English A1 or A2 (higher level or standard level) meets English Language Admission Standard

  47. Certificates • Cannot be used in of themselves as basis of admission • Certificate courses may be used in the calculation of an admission average as long as student has another basis of admission ( such as a US high school diploma or another recognized graduation diploma) • Students admitted conditionally on anticipated grades; must present final IB results for offer of admission to be confirmed • Offers revoked for non-completion of Diploma

  48. Advanced credit • First year credit - offered on completed IB HL courses with a final score of 5 (for arts/humanities courses) or 6 (for math and science courses) • Some first year credit offered on selected SL courses (eg., Physics SL with score of 6 offered first year credit) • Score of A or B in TOK earns 6 credits of UBC 100 Level Philosophy • Typical IB student claims about 18 transfer credits, equal to 6 3-credit courses

  49. Scholarships • Admission-driven merit-based scholarships of varying amounts open to IB students presenting scores of 33+ • IB students competitive for other major entrance awards
