  1. The Restless Earth Inside Earth

  2. YOUR TASK… • You will design a diagram of Earth’s interior to scale • You will conduct your research by reading pages 190-196 in your textbook • You will site your source of information

  3. Restless Earth: Inside Earth

  4. Restless Earth: Inside Earth

  5. INNER CORE: 1) Solid and VERY dense! (made from IRON and NICKEL)

  6. OUTER CORE: 1) Liquid layer surrounding the INNER CORE

  7. MESOSPHERE: 1) Made of the lower part of the MANTLE 2) Reaches from the bottom of the ASTHENOSPHERE to the CORE

  8. ASTHENOSPHERE: 1) A ‘plastic’ layer of the MANTLE 2) Pieces of the LITHOSPHERE move because the ASTHENOSPHERE moves underneath 3) Soft and slow-moving

  9. LITHOSPHERE: 1) Made of CRUST and upper ridge of MANTLE 2) Divided into pieces called TECTONIC PLATES 3) Solid but broken

  10. THE CRUST (lithosphere) The CRUST is the thinnest and outermost layer of Earth 2)There are 2 Types of CRUST: a. Denser oceanic crust b. Less dense continental crust

  11. Compare and Contrast the elements found in each type of crust in a T-chart CONTINENTAL CRUST (less dense) OCEANIC CRUST (more dense)

  12. What causes the cracks in Earth’s crust?

  13. How have scientists used seismic waves to infer that Earth’s interior has many different layers?
