  2. Situations before the launching of the Royal Project • Hill tribes’ slash-and-burn cultivation practice in the mountainous watershed areas; • Hill tribes’ cultivation of rice, corn and opium poppy; • Promulgation of law banning the cultivation of opium poppy in 1959

  3. The Royal Project 1969 - Launching of the Royal Project originated from His Majesty the King’s private study Objectives : • Offer a helping hand to all humankind; • Ensure natural resources for conserving a sustainable future; • Eradicate opium poppy cultivation and opium derived addition problems; • Encourage a wise and proper balance in utilising and conserving land and forest resources.

  4. Operation of the Royal Project Foundation • His Majesty holds the position of Honorary President of the Foundation • Run under the directorship of His Serene Highness Prince Bhisadej Rajani in collaboration with the Royal Thai government, foreign governments, universities, public and private agencies and volunteers. • Emphasis is made on R&D.

Research • Research conducted at 6 experimental stations in Chiang Mai; 5 under the directorship of Kasetsart University and 1 of the Department of Agriculture; • Crops on cultural trial : temperate fruits, vegetables, cut flowers, ferns, coffee, tea, shitake mushrooms, herbs, potatoes, legumes, cereals; dried flowers and fast growing species of forest trees.

  6. Agricultural Extension Introduction of appropriate cash crops and agricultural technology

  7. Development Development of necessary infrastructure : • village roads, • small irrigation systems, • village electricity Improvement of watershed areas through proper land use management and soil conservation practices in the slashed and burned areas.

  8. Socio-economic activities • Self-Help Organizations : rice banks, production groups, village committees, and cooperatives • Small-scale canning plants • Marketing : gathering fresh fruits, vegetables and flowers, packaging, and transporting to the markets under the brand name of Doi Kham

  9. Achievements • 1988 Ramon Magsaysay Award in the category of International Understanding; • 28 experimental stations in Chiang Mai, Chiang Rai, Mae Hong Son, Lamphun, Phayao, and Nan provinces; • Hill tribes’ better standard of living on the cultivationof more profitable highland cash crops; • Consciousness on the conservation of the forest and watersheds; • The Project helps reduce the world supply of illicit drugs.

Latest step linking with tourism • Promotion for tourism of Doi Angkhang, the Royal Project’s pioneering experiment station, supported by Govt. and TAT. • Previous accommodations : camping, bungalow, guesthouse in a hilltribe village • Most recent accommodation : Angkhang Nature Resort, contributing part of its income to the Royal Project • Tourists can explore the experimental plantations, taste and buy fresh produce as well as visit the adjacent hilltribe villages.

Royal Flora Ratchaphruek 2006 An International Horticultural Exposition for His Majesty the King An A-1 Status International Horticultural Exposition will be held in Chiang Mai between 1st November 2006 to the 31st January 2007 to celebrate the 60th Anniversary of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej’s accession to the throne as well as his Majesty’s 80th birthday anniversary.
