  1. Teaching the Net Generation: Curriculum, Pedagogy and the Challenge of 21st Century Learning 10 to 11 September  Cebu City, Philippines TITLE: Weblinks Integration to Teaching Strategies (WITS) in Advanced Chemistry Subjectof Cordillera Regional Science High School AUTHOR’S NAME: ETHIELYN E. TAQUED Science Teacher Date of Presentation:September 10-11, 2008

  2. Overview “Chemistry is pretty much interesting and important. It is all around us all the time.” We read and understand this statement because of chemical reactions occurring in our brain. The main goal of any chemistry intervention is to let students understand concepts of chemistry to better appreciate the world and be effective in whatever career they choose. Tools that… Emphasize on modeling chemical theories. Molecular level of interaction Visualize “micro-macro” connection Visualization animation and video demonstration Interactive learning activity Do away with rote memorization and reinforce traditional learning Your LOGO here Teaching the Net Generation: Curriculum, Pedagogy and the Challenge of 21st Century Learning

  3. NEEDfor good instructional design in Web-enhanced learning !!! ….ATTENTION!! High schools with computers connected to the Internet. Situation: Mastery Level of 85 %-100 % ..below this mark is …… • alarming and frustrating to any teacher who aims for this standard ! an intervention with appropriate and effective learning activities utilizing carefully chosen websites from the Web. Challenge: Concept formation: It is to this effect that OTH and Web quest are used as RBL-ICT Interventions in scaffolding students and to test its effectiveness in the improvement of the academic performance of students. 4. What is : WEB- ENHANCED LEARNING ACTIVITIES (WELA)‏ Foundation for Information Technology Education and Development ONLINE TREASURE HUNT Online Inquiry Based Active learning, exposure with various learning materials, develops reading skills, and varied presentation of topics. Analysis and synthesis to integrate learned truths to real life situations. WEBQUEST Online Inquiry based Activity Creates product/ output Go on a mission with open ended question Involves a Process to accomplish a task Promotes authentic learning through guided experience Develops ICT literacy and higher order thinking skills Your LOGO here Teaching the Net Generation: Curriculum, Pedagogy and the Challenge of 21st Century Learning

  5. Preparations 1. Computer Laboratory- make sure that all computers are working. 2. Grouping the students – pair with someone they have not worked with 3. Orientation – explain the activity , the responsible use of the e-net and other scaffolding tools 4. Rubrics – how they will be graded 5. Work within time frame – Use time allotted for the class 6. Evaluation - comment/critique output Your LOGO here Teaching the Net Generation: Curriculum, Pedagogy and the Challenge of 21st Century Learning

  6. SAMPLE STUDENTS’ OUTPUTS ONLINE TREASURE HUNT Topics: Factors Affecting Solubility Section Alpha(Melodee)‏ Solubility Curve Section Alpha Dagupen-Cyril WEBQUEST Topic: Thermodynamics ( Enthalpy) CD Form Your LOGO here Teaching the Net Generation: Curriculum, Pedagogy and the Challenge of 21st Century Learning

  7. Weblinks Integration in Teaching Strategies (WITS)in Advanced Chemistry Subject ofCordillera Regional Science High School 2007-2008 The Study:: Objectives: To look into the effect of Web Enhanced Learning Strategies (WITS) in the performance of Chemistry II students on Solubility and Thermo Chemistry in terms of the following: a. Mastery Level (MPS)‏ b. Retention Rate (%)‏ To find out problem/s encountered in implementing the (WITS )Strategy The TASK: Online Treasure Hunt WebQuest Online Treasure Hunt 08-09 ICT Tools: MSWord, PowerPoint, Internet The Design: Experimental Group Entire class of Fourth year- Alpha with twenty two (22) students served as the EXPERIMENTAL) group. (WITH WITS)‏ Control Group Entire Twenty two (22) fourth year Beta students served as the CONTROL group with the Traditional Method (WITHOUT WITS). 9. ONLINE TREASURE HUNT Interpretation: SIGNIFICANT Improvement in both the Experimental and the Control. Significant absorption of learning for both experimental and the control groups. WITS intervention and the traditional- classroom strategies are effective learning tools. Your LOGO here Teaching the Net Generation: Curriculum, Pedagogy and the Challenge of 21st Century Learning

  15. Students’ General Comments: 1. “ It is good and fun but needs more time.” 2. “ Good strategy in learning.” 3. “Nice! Good…More….Yes!” 4. “No Comment” 5. “OTH is great!” 6. “ OTH is good and we learned much about solubility.” 7. “More OTH Activities” 8. “ OTH forced ( in a positive way ) me to learn.” 9. “ It is exciting and challenging.” 10.“It is good. I like www.ourvillage world-links than www.nicenet.org in retrieving documents.” 12. “Very Nice and exciting.” 13. “ Good, but I like classroom discussion better.” Your LOGO here Teaching the Net Generation: Curriculum, Pedagogy and the Challenge of 21st Century Learning

  16. Problems Encountered: 5% of the total Implementation time were spent in the following factors: 1. Use of Linux Computers converting to Microsoft word /document. ( addressed) 2. Retrieving of Documents from Linux Computers. (addressed)‏ 3. Retrieving of information from the Net ( waiting time) 4. Current and Inter Net Connection Interruptions. ( In progress separate circuit connections)‏ Your LOGO here Teaching the Net Generation: Curriculum, Pedagogy and the Challenge of 21st Century Learning

  17. INSIGHTS The information derived from the Action Research is relevant to integrate WITS particularly OTH and Webquest to teaching and learning processes in Chemistry II within and across competencies. Furthermore, this can be recommended for integration in other learning areas to enhance the Traditional discussion method.
