  3. Bacteria, virus or protist? • The bubonic plague is actually a bacterial disease. • the bubonic plague was first started by rats getting the bacteria. Fleas then drank the rats blood. Those fleas then spread to other animals. If we pet an animal that has these fleas, and the fleas bite you, guess what! You know have the plague.

  4. Symptoms • Bubonic plague symptoms appear suddenly, usually after 2 - 5 days of exposure to the bacteria. • The symptoms include • Chills • Fever • General ill feeling Headache • Muscle pain • seizures • Smooth, painful lymph gland swelling called a bubo • Commonly found in the groin, but may occur in the armpits or neck, most often at the site of the infection (bite or scratch) • Pain may occur in the area before the swelling appears.

  5. Treatment • People that have gotten the Plague need treatment immediately, if you are not treated within 24 hours of getting bubonic plague, then death may occur. • Antibiotics such as streptomycin, gentamicin, doxycycline, or ciprofloxacin are used to treat plague. • Oxygen,intravenous fluids, and respiratory support are usually also needed in order to treat Bubonic Plague.
