  2. Birth and family • Ulysses S. Grant was born on April 27th , 1822. • His name was Hiram Ulysses Grant. • He had 5 other siblings, Samuel, Clara, Orvil, Virginia, and Mary Grant. • His parents were Jesse and Hannah Grant. • He had lived in Ohio, near the Ohio River.

  3. Childhood • Once while he was 7 years old, he nearly drowned but his friend Daniel Ammens saved him. • When he was 9, he set a record for horse high jumps. • When Hiram turned 17 he changed his name to Ulysses S. Grant. • He later accepted military appointment suggested by his father.

  4. College years • Ulysses S. Grant majored in math and horsemanship. • While in college people began to know him as “Uncle Sam Grant”. • He graduated in 1843 and was assigned to the U.S.’s 4th Infantry.

Military Years • 1847:Ulysses is transferred to Winfield Scott’s Army. • 1848:Grant is married to Julia Boggs Dent(sister of ex-roommate) • After being promoted from first lieutenant to captain, Ulysses moved from New York to Vancouver in 1852. • Became commander of army before retiring in 1854.

Civil war • 1861: Ulysses was in the military recruiting and training troops for the Civil War. • In 1862, Ulysses wins his first major battle for the Union at Cumberland River. • Grant also won at Shiloh Church but, lost great reputation due to large amounts of dead soldiers. • In Chattanooga, Grant won a battle that cut the Confederacy in two. • He was then appointed lieutenant general of all U.S. armies.

  7. Presidency • 1869-Ulysses Grant enters the White House as president. • March 1869-Ulysses signs his first law. • He also worked hard to ratify the 15th amendment. • 1871-Files Ku Klux Klan Act. • In 1872 Grant was reelected as president.

  8. ACHIEVEMENTS • During the Civil War Grant forced Confederate general Robert E. Lee to flee from his fortress. • Weeks later he forced him to surrender in a great battle. Which ended the Civil War. • In 1868, Ulysses became general of all U.S armies. • 1869- He becomes secretary of war. • He was also a reelected president.

  9. DEATH • July 23rd, 1885 Ulysses died at 63 years of age. • It is believed that he died due to throat cancer.
