  1. Tides: The ocean’s motion is simply a lunar commotion!

  2. Bay of Fundy, Canada

  3. 6 hours later…

  4. Objectives: What do we want to learn? Students will be able to: • Analyze the relationship between gravitational pull and tide intervals • Realize that the timing of the tides is related to the cause of the tides • Realize why the moon has more power over tides than the sun

  5. Analyze the relationship between gravitational pull and tide intervals • The moon has mass, therefore the moon has GRAVITY • As the Earth’s gravity tugs on the moon, the moon’s gravity is also tugging back on Earth- Remember the jump rope demo? • The moon’s gravity has the greatest effect on the Earth’s oceans, through the tides

  6. Video Clip #1- How does the moon's gravity cause tides?

  7. How many high tides and low tides do we experience every day? • Label the high tides with “H”, label the low tides with “L” http://my.hrw.com

  8. IMPORTANT FACT: The TIMING of the tides are due to the Earth’s ROTATION as well as the Moon’s LOCATION relative to Earth.

  9. What causes this particular high tide?

  10. Realize that the timing of the tides is related to the cause of the tides Video Clip #2: Timing of the Tides http://my.hrw.com **To access video clips from Holt Online textbook, follow these directions: 1. Login with username and password @ http://my.hrw.com 2. Go to SHORT COURSE H 3. Information on Tides can be found in: Chapter 3, Section 4, pg. 96-99 4. Video clips can be found under the tab marked VISUALS

  11. Predict the timing of the tides in Belmar, NJ for 11/26/07

  12. Predict the timing of the tides in Belmar, NJ for 11/26/07

  13. Which has a greater pull on the tides, the Moon or the Sun?

  14. Answer: The Moon! • The Sun is 400 times more MASSIVE than the Moon • But the Moon is 400 times CLOSER to the Earth than the Sun. • Therefore, the gravitational attraction between the Earth and Moon is GREATER because of the SHORTER distance apart from one another

  15. Tides: Putting it all together Video Clip #3: The Moon and Tides Questions? Comments? Concerns?
