  1. “SMART” Goals Some are “SMARTER” than others

  2. Specific • Clear and unambiguous; • Generalities and platitudes have no place in task assignments. When tasks are specific, everybody knows exactly what is expected, when, and how much. Because the tasks are specific, you can easily measure progress and success.

  3. Measurable • What good is a task that you can’t measure? • If task outcomes are not measurable, you never know whether there is progress or success. Not only that, but it’s hard to motivate people to complete tasks that don’t have milestones to indicate progress and success.

  4. Attainable • Realistic and attainable by average people. • The best tasks require a stretch, but they aren’t extreme; they are neither out of reach nor below standard performance. Tasks that are too hard or too easy become meaningless and are ignored

  5. Relevant • Important tools in the grand scheme of accomplishing the plan’s objective. • Application of the Pareto rule: 80 percent of success comes from 20 percent of activity. Relevant tasks address the 20 percent of activity that has great impact on performance and accomplishes the plan’s objective.

  6. Time-bound • Have starting points, ending points, and fixed durations. • Commitment to deadlines helps focus efforts on completion of the task on or before the due date. Tasks without deadlines or schedules for completion tend to be overtaken by the day-to-day crises that invariably arise.

  7. Evaluate • This is an important step in being able to duplicate your efforts. • If you don’t evaluate, how will you know if you have been effective? • Recording this information will make your Hallmark entries easier.

  8. Re-Evaluate or Reward • Do you want to do this again? • What was the impact? • Shall we celebrate?

  10. Key Elements • Chapter Name: Your chapter • Goals: Goals of your chapter, theme • Event: Title of specific event • Purpose/goals of event: More specific than general goal, funds for ??, Inform about?? • SWOT, things to keep in mind that may effect the success of the event

  11. SWOTStrengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, Threats

  12. Participants • What is each role? • Chair? • Supplies • Outside resource? • Publicity? • What NAME goes with each role? • Write down contact for each name.

  13. Tasks • Do these in SMART format • Specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, time-bound

  14. Assess or debrief • What went well? • What problems came up? • Can we repeat this? • Write it all down! Store in several places!
