  1. Generation Y Michael Berry

  2. Perceptions of Generation Y • We Are: • Lazy • Needy • Lacking In social skills • Not committed to Work • Unrealistic Expectations • Too Self-Centered and Individualistic

  3. Lacking In Social Skills • Of the perceptions of Generation Y, I choose to challenge the perception that we lack Social Skill. • My opinion is that we do, I am part of Generation Y and I see Social Skills lacking in younger cousins and siblings.

  4. The Five W’s • Who: Anyone born from 1980 to 2000 • What is Wrong with the Who: Lack Social skills. • Where is their main social skills demonstrated: On “social” networking site • When are they on these site: 24/7/365 except when the site crashes or their internet crashes(sometime bypassed)

  5. Why are they lacking this skill? • The definition of social or being social: • “living together or enjoying life in communities or organized groups” • “a party of people assembled to promote sociability and communal activity” • “marked by friendly companionship with others; "a social cup of coffee”” • Of all these definitions of social not one of these are what are expressed on these “social” networking sites

  6. What Being Social met for older Generations Being invited and going to Balls and formal dinners! Eating and talking with friends and strangers! Talking and discussing issues over a nice cup of coffee or tea

  7. As humans we have withdrawn from these social activities and instead used the internet to fill this void, which overtime will and is extinguishing Social skills. • More and more children are being brought up on video games and the internet and more and more are not venturing outside to socialize with there neighbors and friends • Most people don’t take face to face anymore it is either over email, phone or a text. • Just look at breaks, we not have break up emails or text, when the social thing to do was to talk to the other person in the relationship and say I don’t want to be with you.

  8. More and more people are noticing that the internet is affecting social skills • http://www.associatedcontent.com/article/161571/internet_usage_and_social_skills_correlation.html?cat=15 • The Article above show that there is strong research that supports this idea of the lack of social skills

  9. How Do we Fix it? • Ultimately get rid of the internet, but that will do more bad than good • We should construct the teaching or building of social skills with in class rooms and schools

  10. Conclusion • Ultimately, more and more generations are lacking social skills ,and being social is going to change over time just as it already has, we will we ever see the social skills we are use to I don’t know but I and highly doubtful.
