  2. Source • Elizabeth Gerber, “Using Improvisation to Enhance the Effectiveness of Brainstorming”, CHI Conference, 2009 • She was a Design PhD student from Stanford who learned Improv from Patricia Madson. She worked extensively with Silicon Valley companies. She’s generally an activist.

  3. What’s New Brainstorming Improv Variation One person suggests something. Someone else embellishes. Repeat until clarity or exhaustion. Repeat until time out • Withhold judgment. • Build on ideas of others. • Generate lots of ideas. • Free wheel. • Use a coach. • Each person suggests idea. • Write them down. • Discuss until time out.

Why is improv brainstorming better. • In regular brainstorming… • Each person is trying to think of an idea while other is saying one—not listening. • Each idea is still associated with a person—who will win? • In improv brainstorming… • Everyone focuses on same ideas. • Same number of possibilities can be considered. • Ownership of ideas is communal.
