How Did We Do It? • Developed 20/30 Dementia Trainers some were Dementia Champions • Worked with the Alzheimer’s Society on the content • Ran it through the Yeovil Academy • Targeted all staff groups including carers, PPI members, volunteers. The PCT and a local nursing home • Ran it from November, 2010 – March, 2011 • Advertised in newsletters, web browser and Peer Review monitoring process • Word of mouth was our most powerful tool

Need more knowledge about services external to the Trust Bring back day rooms Make more explicit the links with learning disabilities, vulnerable adults and dementia Totally interesting and refreshing to know that so much is being done to help improve patient care What did our staff tell us? Can we have more training on dementia We need more staff to be able to treat each patient with dementia Better cups and utensils It shouldn’t be a hour it needs to be a Day to Remember! Would like to see ‘This is me’ introduced Need more guidance on dealing with challenging behaviours Introduce activity co-ordinators Get more carers involved in the sessions

  5. We are reshaping our services to be much more patient centred We all have increased confidence in caring for patients with dementia What have we learnt along the way? Dementia patients have a much higher priority – particularly in maintaining their level of functionality and ensuring they are discharge to the appropriate environment as soon as possible Great priority towardsengagements with relatives and carers Staff have a more positive attitude towards caring for patients with dementia Raising staff awareness has been the single most important thing we have done The importance of working with our nursing homes to give more seamless care
