Nonvascular- plants that lack tube-like cells do not have “true” roots, stems, & leaves nutrients and gases travel via diffusion from cell to cell • Also known as the BRYOPHYTES Vascular- plants that have tube-like cells 1. xylem: carry water throughout the plant 2. phloem: carry nutrients throughout the plant have roots, stems, & leaves

  3. SEEDLESS VASCULAR PLANTS Phylum Pterophyta: Ferns The majority of Ferns are tropical Ferns have a vascular system They reproduce using Spores NOT SEEDS Spores under the fern leaf

  4. SEEDLESS VASCULAR PLANTS Sporophyte Pterophyta: Ferns Sporophyte (2N Diploid) generation is dominant Gametophyte generation is flat and heart shaped Contain antheridia (sperm) and archaegonia (eggs) They are monoecious Sperm needs water to swim to egg Gametophyte

  5. Phylum Gymnosperm Gametophytes within a Cone Phylum Angiosperm Gametophytes within flowers Adapted to living anywhere Sporophyte generation is dominant Sperm is now transferred within gametophyte with no need for water VASCULAR PLANTSwith seeds

  6. Gymnosperm Life Cycle • Trees form male and female cones • Male cones are thinner and smaller, usually found near top of tree • Female cones are fatter, usually found near bottom of tree and VERY sticky (to collect pollen)
