  1. Bleeding Control with Tourniquet

  2. Conditions • The candidate should perform this skill on a simulated patient under existing indoor, ambulance, or outdoor lighting, temperature, and weather conditions.

  3. Indications • Any patient with severe bleeding that is uncontrolled by direct pressure, elevation, and pressure points

  4. Red Flags • Tourniquet use is a bleeding control measure of last resort. • Prolonged lack of circulation can result in loss of the limb distal to the tourniquet.

  5. PPE!

  6. Attempt to control bleeding: • direct pressure • elevate extremity • pressure points

  7. Use proper materials

  8. Apply tourniquet

  9. Place material proximal to injury

  10. Wrap material tightly, leaving two ends free

  11. Place small stick or rod, the diameter of pinky finger and < 12 inches long, on bandage and tie a knot

  12. Secret: Make sure stick or rod is centered under knot

  13. Twist to tighten tourniquet until bleeding stops

  14. Tie loose ends to prevent slipping

  15. Write “TK” and time of tourniquet application on patient’s head or tourniquet

  16. Treat for shock and transport rapidly

  17. Use PPE!!!

  18. Try all other methods of bleeding control before considering tourniquet

  19. Use appropriate material

  20. Document the time of application on patient’s head or tourniquet
