  1. Warioware: Smooth Moves Representation

  2. What is represented? • Gender • masculinity • femininity • Race (nationality)

  3. Gender: Masculinity What do these mini-games say about masculinity

  4. Gender: Masculinity • Many of the games emphasise masculine characteristics: • Strength • Speed • Use of tools • Race Driver These are all men

  5. Masculinity • Men are shown in traditional roles • Men are shown as strong, athletic, fighters... • ...or else old and wise • These are fairly accessible/traditional representations of masculinity

  6. Gender: Women • Most of the games are genderless • 4/200 mini-games feature women in conspicuous roles • What representations of women do we see here? • How do they compare with the representations of men?

  7. Mini-Narratives • Mona – late for the game; cheerleader; unaware of love • Kat & Ana – go to fight demon; one gets carried off; other hardly notices • Ashley – tries to cast spells; gets is wrong • Penny – enginee: builds the best machine 4/13 of the games are played as women Seems to suggest that women can be cheerleaders, warriors, witches or engineers A muddle of traditional and non-traditional roles Is this game promoting a feminist or post-feminist agenda?

  8. Gender: Women • What does this image highlight to us? • Is there a corresponding one for men? • What might this say about traditional gender roles? • Representation of women is ultimately much less clear-cut than it is for men.

  9. Race: International • What stereotypes are drawn on in these games? • How do they relate to ideas about masculinity?

  10. Race: Japanese • What do these representations of Japanese people have in common?

  11. Race: Japanese • How are these representations similar? • How are they different? • What do these two sources draw on?

  12. Race: Japanese • “These Japanese game characters seem to represent the diversity in Japanese culture: youth culture, pop idols, and ancient Japan.” MintLime Games

  13. Representation: closing thoughts • Rep of masculinity seems to be fairly conventional – supports traditional patriarchal ideas • Rep of women seems split between some patriarchal idea & some post-feminist ideas (do they just pay lip-service to the post-feminist ideas?) • Rep of Japanese is very accessible to both domestic and international audiences
