LuciferaseCell(Englishname:Luciferase)isthegeneralnameoftheenzymesthatcanproduce bioluminescenceinnature.ThemostrepresentativeoneisLuciferaseinfirefly,whichiscalled Photinuspyrali.Fluorescenceisproducedbytheoxidationofluciferininthecorresponding chemicalreactions,andinsomecasesthereactionsystemalsoincludesadenosinetriphosphate (ATP).Withoutluciferase,luciferinreactsveryslowlywithoxygen,andthepresenceofcalcium ionsoftenacceleratesthereactionfurther(similartomusclecontraction). Luciferinorluciferaseisnotaspecificmolecule,butratherageneraltermforallthesubstrates andcorrespondingenzymesthatproducefluorescence,althoughtheyvary.Differentluminescent organismsusedifferentluciferaseenzymestocatalyzedifferentluminescentreactions.Thebest knownbioluminescentorganismisthefirefly,whichUSESdifferentluciferaseenzymesfromother bioluminescentorganismssuchasthefireflymushroom(Omphalotusoleariu')ormanyMarine organisms.Infireflies,theoxygenneededforthebioluminescentresponseispumpedintoatube calledtheabdominaltrachea.Someorganisms,suchastheelater,containavarietyofdifferent

Fluorescencecanbeemittedbyaddingthecorrectluciferinsubstratetoluciferase,andthe emittedphotoncanbedetectedbylightsensitiveelementssuchasfluorescencedetectoror improvedopticalmicroscope.Thismakesitpossibletoobservethecourseofmanylifeprocesses, includinginfection.Forexample,luciferasecanbeusedtodetectwhetherredbloodcellsinblood Banksarebeginningtobreakdown.Forensicscientistscanuseasolutioncontainingluciferaseto detecttracesofbloodleftatacrimescene.Hospitalsuseluciferaselighttodetectspecific diseases.Luciferasecanalsobeusedasa"reporterprotein"inmolecularbiologystudies,for example,todetecttranscriptionofspecificpromotersincellstransfectedwithluciferaseorto detectintracellularATPlevels.ThetechniqueiscalledreporterAssayorLuciferaseAssay. Luciferaseisaheatsensitiveproteinandisoftenusedtostudytheprotectivecapacityofheat shockproteinsduringproteinthermaldegeneration.
