  4. OPS Strategic DirectionsSchool plan 2018-2020 Knowledge Construction- Students are provided with opportunities to construct and apply knowledge, not just reproduce information given. This is done through taking a cross-curricular approach to teaching and learning. Collaboration-Students engage in activities that promote a shared responsibility for the work produced and is designed in a way that requires students to make substantive decisions together. Effective Feedback- Teachers gain and apply feedback from students to assist in determining the curriculum direction and students are provided with feedback that promotes a ‘growth mindset’.

  5. Knowledge construction- Literacy Kindergarten are implementing the InitiaLit program which integrates all of the Literacy strands. • InitiaLit is a research initiative of Macquarie University • OPS was a pilot school in 2017 with excellent results • This program addresses the five key components of effective reading instruction (phonics, phonemic awareness, fluency, vocabulary and comprehension skills) as well as handwriting, writing and spelling

  6. Knowledge construction- Integration of Curriculum Areas • Integrated Unit Term 1- ‘Me and my Family’ (History, Geography, Creative Arts & PD/H) Students will be learning how to: • Identify people in their immediate families and discuss the relationships between family members. • Discuss where members of their families were born. • Identify and record similarities and difference between families. • Share experiences of families, school, holidays and events that are celebrated or observed. • Science Unit, Term 1 – ‘Weather in My World’ Students will be learning how to: • Observe, discuss and inquire about the seasons and the weather.

Knowledge construction- Personal Development, health and Physical Education • Building Friendships • Dance: Lessons held on a Friday in the hall where children develop their fundamental movement skills. It is an opportunity for all of Kindergarten to have some fun together and establish friendships from other classes. • Got Game

  9. Collaboration Developmental Play Program All students in Kindergarten will participate in developmental play in the afternoons. The aim of constructive play sessions include: • Focusing on fine motor skills • Building self-confidence and esteem • Learning turn taking • Developing friendships • Interacting with peers • Building resilience and independence • Promoting creative problem solving • Development of receptive and expressive language • Exploration • STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, Mathematics)

  10. Feedback • Feedback may be given in many forms – verbal feedback is used the most with students in Kindergarten. • Feedback is not always given from the teacher. An important part of the learning process is being able to reflect on one’s own learning and progress and to provide others with feedback through peer reviews. • Feedback is successful when is causes thinking and when it explicitly outlines/identifies ‘where to next?’.

  11. Best start and reporting • All best Start testing has been completed. The children were tested in Literacy and Numeracy. • The children are tested only once using the Best Start resources. • Children are then monitored through class assessments throughout the rest of their schooling. • You will receive a written report generated from the individual student results via mail in the next 2 weeks . • There will be parent/teacher interviews at the end of Term 1. • A written school report will be sent home at the end of Terms 2 and 4.

  12. School Business Drop off/Pick up Procedures In the morning: • Children are to line up under the COLA in their class lines once the bell has gone. • The Northern playground is out of bounds before school. • No child is permitted to enter a classroom without a teacher. • Children attending OOSH will be supervised whilst walking to the playground once the first bell has gone. In the afternoon: • All students will be waiting outside of the classroom at 3.20. The teacher must sight a parent/carer (as outlined in ‘Pick up procedures’ note) before the child is let go. If there are any variations to this routine please notify the office and they will notify the class teacher. If parents/carers are running late, your child will be taken to the office. • Children attending OOSH will be supervised whilst walking to the Kindergarten Balcony. All teachers have a duty of care to ensure students move to their classrooms and exit the school safely. If you require time to speak to your child's teacher in regards to a daily issue or matter, we ask that you go to the office and request an appointment. Teacher will get back to you to arrange a time to meet.

  13. School Business Absences • Please provide a note explaining your child's absence on the first day that you child is back at school. With the new administration system mandated by the department (LMBR) all absences must be explained within 7 days. After this time rolls are locked and no changes can be made. • Notes can also be submitted online through the School Stream App • Absence notes are to be given to your child's classroom teacher. • If your child is late or is to be collected earlier than usual, a partial absence note needs to be completed by the office and given to your child’s teacher. • Holidays- anything longer than 5 days go to the office to fill out a form. Money/Permission Notes All money and permission notes are to be placed in the black box outside the office. If online payment has been made for excursions or any other school event a permission slip is still required.

  14. School uniform/Belongings • The school hat is part of the school uniform and must be worn on the playground at all times. • No hat = play in shade. • Clearly label all items including jackets, hats, lunch boxes and water bottles. • Please teach your child to tie their shoe laces to promote self-confidence and independence. • Lost property is located near the boys and girls toilet. Purchasing ‘Smart Tags’ for items from the uniform shop means that when items are placed in lost property, parents are notified via SMS. Don’t forget to activate the code!

  15. Food at School Packing Lunches: • Please pack fruit/veg and a snack for students to have at fruit break. • Please be realistic about the amount of food your child can consume in a day and remember that most children are anxious to play at lunch. • Promote independence with eating lunch. Canteen • The School Canteen is open Monday to Thursday (inclusive). • All lunch orders must be ordered online through Flexi Schools. Visit the school Website for further information regarding this. Birthdays We welcome birthday treats on your child’s special day! Cake knives are not kept in the classroom so we please ask that all birthday treats are individually portioned and ready to hand out e.g. cupcakes, cookies etc Nut Free Environment- Due to the increase in students with severe allergies, we ask that you are mindful when packing lunches for your children. Oatley Public School is a NUT FREE ZONE.

  16. Library procedures… • Students must come to library lessons prepared with a library bag for borrowing • All library books must be returned before the 9.20am bell

  19. Whole school wellbeing framework • The whole school uses a behaviour thermometer. This ensures that students are aware of the consequences of their behaviour if they make the wrong choice. It also ensures consistent teacher judgement in the playground and in individual classrooms. • Behaviours are linked to School Values • Yellow Cards = Official Warnings (AP involved) • Red Cards = Reflection Room (AP involved) • There is a reflection room used once a week during lunch time. During this time, students who have received a red card will spend some of their lunch time thinking and writing about their actions.
