Wanted: President of the United States. One of the most stressful jobs in the world is acting as the leader of the free world. The Presidency has affected greatly the appearance and health of a large % of the men who have sat in office.

  1. Wanted: President of the United States One of the most stressful jobs in the world is acting as the leader of the free world. The Presidency has affected greatly the appearance and health of a large % of the men who have sat in office. One of the reasons for this is the many roles the President of the United States has. How would you react to having at minimum, seven different roles that last for 4 or 8 years?

  2. How Many Hats Does The President Wear? • Chief of State • Chief Executive • Chief Administrator • Chief Diplomat • Commander in Chief • Chief Legislator • Chief of Party • Chief Citizen

  3. Chief of State • Ceremonial Head of US Gov. • Symbol of the People of the USA • Many other Countries Chief of State is Just a “Figure Head” • (England, Japan, etc)

  4. Chief Executive • Head of The Executive Branch US Gov • Responsible/Wields all power as described by the Constitution • Presidency often described as most powerful office in the world

  5. Chief Administrator • Director of the Federal Government • US Federal Government one of largest governmental machines in the world • More than 2.7 million civilian employees of the US Gov • US Gov spends Trillions of Dollars a Year

  6. Chief Diplomat • Main architect of American Foreign Policy • Chief Spokesman to rest of the world • Incredibly important because of US’s position as a world power (influential)

Commander in Chief • President is Commander in Chief of Nation’s Armed Forces • Constitution Provides This Power • George Washington’s experience influenced this decision originally • Nearly 2 million serve in the US military • May use forces even without a direct declaration of war by Congress

  8. Chief Legislator • Main Architect of Public Policies • Presidential helps set overall shape of Congressional agenda • President initiates, suggests, requests, insists, and demands that Congress enact much of its major legislation

  9. Chief of Party • Role Not Directly From US Constitution • Acknowledged as leader of Political Party that controls Executive Branch • Actions/Inaction of President can greatly improve or hinder Party’s chances in future elections

  12. FormalQualifications • Natural Born Citizen of United States • At Least 35 Years of Age • Lived in the United States at Least 14 Years *Informal Requirements are much more difficult to meet

  13. Pay and Benefits • $400,000 Annual Salary • $50,000 Expense Allowance • Residence in the White House • Air Force Once • Camp David Retreat (Maryland) • Presidential Vehicles (Helicopters, Etc) • Health Care Services • Travel and Entertainment Funds

Assignment: Use the graphic organizer, your notes and the attached PDF file to review and summarize the different roles/jobs a President has You should then create a “Help Wanted” ad describing the responsibilities (all 8 roles)of a President as well as the compensation/benefits he/she receives. Be creative, include at least one picture. Your ad should appear as though it is part of a newspaper or an online “Help Wanted” ad. (e.g. – Monster)
