  1. SoRo Educator Summer Work Sessions 6-17-14 On June 6, 2013 Governor Peter Shumlin signed the Flexible Pathways bill (S.130/Act77) What does this mean for SoRo?

Expand: HS/College Dual Enrollment VT: • VT: 2 ‘free’ courses prior to graduation; -or- teachers certified local then payment formula to college (state payment) • NY: Advanced Studies Program at Genesee Community College (western NY)… HS partner teachers at 50 schools each school hosts 3-10 dual enrolled courses. Cost: If students want credits = cost $50 per credit hour (most courses =$150). Schools pay $0, Counties add some $ • GCC website: http://www.genesee.edu/ace/advanced/?HSCode=HALE • Expand: Early College Programs (ex. VAST; others) • Increase access: work-based learning (ex. CBL) • Increase: virtual/blended learning opportunities (online) • Increase access: Career &Technical Education • Implement: Personalized Learning Plans (PLPs)

More Details to Digest Early College… • Early college program: VAST; Vermont State Colleges, or accredited VT postsecondary • Each enrolled 12th grade VT student: • summary=state pays ~87 % of base education (if $ avail.) • Show me the money: • Enrolled full-time student-institution receives academic year $; • No concurrent enrollment in secondary school of residence or to which the district pays tuition on the student’s behalf; and • Not included in the average daily membership of any school district for the academic year for which payment is made; provided, however, that if more than five percent of the 12th grade students…

SoRoWBL Gold Standards VERMONT GOLD STANDARDS FOR WORK-BASED LEARNING 1.  WBL available as part of a program of study leading to college and career readiness.  2.  Qualified professional facilitates WBL activities as identified in the Vermont Work Based Learning Guide. 3.Employers develop the future workforce through WBL activities.  4.  Students' individual needs &goals are incorporated into WBL activities. 5.WBL activities are coordinated as a continuum of career development.  6.WBL activities are integrated with academic standards. 7.  WBL activities are utilized as a mechanism to acquire 21st Century Skills for all students to succeed in the workplace.  8.  WBL activities are compliant with legal, health, and safety regulations. *color indicates areas esp. looking to improve upon

Personal Learning Plans (PLPs) • Every student grades 7-12 have personalized learning planning: • (Required Nov. 2015 for 7th/9th and Dual Enrolled) • Critical Elements: • identify emerging abilities, disposition, etc.; • includes participation by engaged adults; • guides decisions… course offerings, and other high-quality educational experiences.

PLPs: What does the Research show? • Improve student motivation and engagement • Improve students’ understanding of postsecondary options and long-term planning. • Improve school-family communication and foster family involvement in academic and career planning. • Increase student awareness of their individual strengths and weaknesses.
