  1. Observations review Answer the 12 review questions.

  2. Correlational Studies • A way of establishing whether there is a relationship between two variables • Assessing the strength of that relationship • Unlike experiments, correlational studies do not tell you about causal relationships

  3. Correlational Studies • Measure the two variables to obtain two sets of paired scores • There is no IV or DV • There are 2 co-variables • Analyse the relationship by: • Drawing a scattergraph • Calculating a correlation coefficient

  4. Types of Correlation • Positive • As one variable rises, so does the other • Negative • As one variable rises, the other falls

  5. Correlational Studies • Research question: is there a relationship between stress and illness? • Co-variable 1: scores on a stress questionnaire • Co-variable 2: number of days absent from college since September • Alternative hypothesis: There will be a positive correlation between stress scores and number of absences

  6. Correlational Studies • Research question: is there a relationship between work ethic and AS marks? • Variable 1: number of hours homework per week • Variable 2: AS test mark (Max 24) • H1: There will be a positive correlation between number of hours of homework and AS marks

  7. Correlation Coefficient • A statistical method for assessing the strength of a correlation • The sign (+ or -) tells you the direction of the correlation • The number (between 0 and 1) tells you the strength

  8. Evaluation Can be conducted on variables which can be measured but not manipulated (an experiment might be impractical or unethical) Can demonstrate presence or absence of relationship – useful for identifying areas for future experimental research

  9. Evaluation Cannot indicate whether a relationship is causal (due to one of the measured variables or another, unknown, variable) Can only be used with variables that can be measured on a scale

  10. Ethical issues review Identify 3 ethical issues Identify 3 ethical guidelines C R D • D • I • P

  11. Task 1 Check the table of ethics.
