  2. Definitions Vowels :the sounds produced without making obstacles on the stream of the sound coming out of throat. Diphthongs :the same as the above but they consist of two sounds with a glide from one sound to another. Consonants: the sounds produced with an obstacle on the air stream. Stress : the prominence of the sound in a syllable, or word. Intonation: the way voice goes up and down in pitch.

Keys to learn stress • English is a stress dependant language , it means changing the stress pattern may change the meaning , and it does not have a predetermined stress pattern for all words. • Every word must have a primary stress if it is pronounced alone. • Every phrase must have at least one primary stress resulting in changing the primary stress of others to lower stress pattern. • The weak sound would not naturally get primary stress. • In a sentence one word usually gets the primary stress changing the pattern of others to a lower one.

Some general patterns of stress in a phrase • Content words usually get major stress in a phrase or sentence and one of them gets the primary one. • The following words would get the primary stress in a phrase: • In adjective phrase ,noun, • in noun compounds , the first noun, • in verb or adjective with a prep, the verb or adjective , • in two-word verbs, prep • In verb phrase the main verb • In combination of a auxiliary and not “not” • the words which carry the new pieces of information
