The foods rich in antioxidants are called superfoods. So, what are antioxidants? Antioxidants are substances that counter the effects of free radicals in the body. When certain kinds of oxygen molecules travel freely in the body, they cause damage. This damage is known as oxidative damage, and can cause a number of ailments, ranging from cancer to ageing. Free radicals can be caused by toxins, smoking, chemicals, pollution, and other environmental reasons. Benefits of antioxidants 1.Antioxidants may help combat heart disease. 2.They may help improve the symptoms associated with anxiety and depression. 3.They may boost the immune system. 4.They may slow down ageing. 5.They are believed to help improve vision.

Here are 5 ways to improve your antioxidant intake: 1.Eat berries: All kinds of berries – blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, goji berries etc. are well known sources of antioxidants. A fistful of these every day and you could live a long, healthy life. 2.Snack on nuts: Walnuts, pecans, and hazelnuts are excellent sources of antioxidants. Keep in mind that nuts are usually high in calories, so consume no more than a few a day. Nuts are also rich in vitamins and healthy fats. 3.Sip green tea: Green tea is rich in polyphenols that have effects like reducing inflammation and helping to fight cancer. Green tea is about 30 percent polyphenols by weight, including large amounts of a catechin called EGCG. Catechins are natural antioxidants that help prevent cell damage and provide other benefits. 4.Spice up your food: Spices like cloves, ginger, garlic, turmeric, and cinnamon are excellent sources of antioxidants. From helping with motion sickness, treating bronchitis, to stabilising blood sugar and fighting free radicals, these spices come with a host of health benefits. So be sure to add a pinchful of these to your dishes. Bonus: They really make food taste good! 5.Indulge in dark chocolate and red wine: Dark chocolate and red wine, both are recommended over ordinary milk chocolate and white wine respectively because of their very high antioxidant content.
